POSITION INFORMATION

Placer County is recruiting entry level Road Maintenance Workers within the Road Maintenance Division of the Department of Public Works and Facilities. To learn more about the department CLICK HERE.

The Road Maintenance Division has corporation yards located in Tahoe (Burton Creek and Cabin Creek), Colfax, Foresthill, Auburn and Lincoln. They are seeking motivated and capable entry level employees to join their team. The Division is responsible for the following:

  • Repairs and maintains over 1,000 miles of roadways within unincorporated Placer County from Roseville to Tahoe.
  • Provides roadside tree and vegetation control and emergency roadway hazard response.
  • Repairs and maintains 125 bridges throughout Placer County.
  • Maintains roadway signs, striping, and traffic signals.
  • Provides snow removal for 235 miles of roadway in eastern Placer County, including North Lake Tahoe.

DEFINITION

To perform various entry level maintenance duties within the Road Maintenance Division. 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is an entry level class in the series.  This class is distinguished from the journey level by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series.  Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgement on matters allocated to the journey level.  Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.  Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Operate light and moderately heavy equipment such as dump and water trucks, pavers, rollers, rotary mowers, snow plows and sanders, skip loaders and back hoes, in tasks of excavation, digging, plowing, mowing, hauling and loading; assist in equipment maintenance by performing minor repairs and service tasks as needed; may operate heavy equipment for relief or training purposes under close supervision; manually assist in resurfacing, oiling, and patching; clean ditches and culverts, lay drainage pipe, build fences and repair storm drains; load and unload materials and supplies; perform traffic control including set up and removal of signs and cones and flagging; perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: No experience is required.

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate: May need to possess a valid driver’s license as required by the position and in accordance with the California Vehicle Code. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • General use and purpose of maintenance equipment and hand tools.
  • Safe driving practices and general safe work practices. 

Ability to:

  • On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules.
  • Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment and tools; interpret work orders; remember equipment and tool location; remember street/road names and general geographic areas.
  • Intermittently, sit while completing forms or reports; bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist and reach when repairing, installing, painting, or removing traffic signs or setting up traffic control zones; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation; regularly lift very heavy weight.
  • Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine proper course of action.
  • Safely and effectively perform duties and operate equipment in regular traffic areas.
  • Work unusual and prolonged work schedules; work multiple shifts during emergencies, seasonally-caused circumstances, or special projects in varying climatic and temperature conditions.
  • Use hand tools.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Written Examination (100%) 

The written examination for Road Maintenance Worker will be held the week of June 12, 2017 at two different locations, which include: SOUTH PLACER and TRUCKEE. You will be asked to indicate your preferred testing location during the application process.

NOTE: In the event of inclement weather, the exam scheduled for the Truckee area may be rescheduled. Applicants will be notified via email if the exam is rescheduled.

There will not be alternative or make-up exam date(s) scheduled. The supplemental questionnaire for this recruitment will allow applicants to select their preferred testing location. You will be notified of your scheduled examination date, time, and location after the posted filing deadline.

The written examination may include multiple choice, true/false, fill-in, matching, and/or essay type questions directly related to the required knowledge and abilities for this classification.

All applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be required to respond to an online Conviction History Questionnaire, which will be sent as a link on their notification that minimum qualifications have been met. Failure to respond to this questionnaire within (3) three calendar days of the minimum qualification notification will result in disqualification from the examination.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination, which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation, sign a constitutional oath and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S.  For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation and/or be bonded.

MODIFIED AGENCY SHOP

All new permanent employees, with the exception of sworn law enforcement and those in management and confidential groups, shall be required to join the employee organization or pay an 'Agency Fee' as a condition of employment.

SUBSTITUTE LISTS

The eligible list(s) resulting from this recruitment may be certified as a substitute list for a substantially similar classification.  For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required). If you are contacted for an interview by a County department, you will be informed of the classification and other relevant information. If you choose not to interview for a substantially similar classification, you will remain on the eligible list for which you originally applied.

EMPLOYEES OF OTHER PUBLIC AGENCIES
