The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Business Tax Auditor. The successful candidate will perform difficult professional work and conduct field and desk audits with limited supervision; research, interpret and apply local, state and case law, and rulings and opinions to administer tax programs fairly, equitably and uniformly; plan and coordinate audit examinations; gather data and analyze business operations, tax returns, and other business records to ensure proper classification and assessment for business license, business tangible personal property, excise and other local taxes; interact confidently with business owners, CPAs, attorneys, and other tax professionals to ensure local tax compliance and defend assessments; develop and maintain detailed audit work papers; utilize data provided by state and local resources for discovery purposes; maintain confidentiality of tax information; participate in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws; and provide court testimony as necessary.
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Business, Management, Finance, or a related field, and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in taxation or finance. Must have excellent communication, research and analytical skills, knowledge of business structures and business income taxes (both Federal and Virginia), and general accounting abilities.
Must be proficient in Microsoft office applications. Must have the ability to tour commercial facilities of all types.
