Position is within the Code Enforcement Division of the Department of Building & Development. Duties include conducting all requested plumbing and gas system inspections. Applicants must have a thorough knowledge of materials, methods and practices involved in installing and maintaining all components of buildings, structures, and equipment as defined in the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, as well as, the ability to interpret construction plans and documents; exercise diplomacy and tact in enforcing the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code; Must have the ability to maintain effective working relationships with owners, architects and contractors. This position requires the ability to conduct visual and physical inspections; ability to climb ladders and stairs; ability to maneuver in crawl spaces; and the ability to maneuver through construction debris.
Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School diploma or equivalent and at least four (4) years of experience in a related field.
Must become certified by the State Board of Housing and Community Development as a Plumbing and Gas Inspector within the timeframe stated on State guidelines from the time of employment and maintain the required certifications in accordance with Virginia Certification Standards.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, and driving record check required.
Required to work in all types of climatic conditions (i.e. cold & heat), in all types of environments (i.e. mud, snow) and terrain. Must have the ability to diffuse potentially volatile customers and recognize that errors in work could lead to extraordinary costs and problems. Requires the ability to work in stressful environment. May occasionally work in hazardous conditions during emergency operations. Must comply with the Virginia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
