JOB DESCRIPTION

The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking candidates to fill a Senior Business Tax Auditor position. This position assists the Deputy Commissioner Compliance with the development of audit goals and selection of audit candidates; monitoring system performance, trouble shooting and resolving office technology and systems issues for the audit program. The candidate will mentor fellow auditors and review work of business tax auditors during first year of employment to ensure that they are properly indoctrinated. This position performs more complicated audits assigned by the Deputy Commissioner Compliance and difficult professional work conducting field and desk audits with limited supervision; researches, interprets and applies local, state and case law, and rulings and opinions to administer tax programs fairly, equitably and uniformly; plans and coordinates audit examinations; gathers data and analyzes business operations, tax returns, and other business records to ensure proper classification and assessment for business license, business tangible personal property, excise and other local taxes; interacts confidently with business owners, CPAs, attorneys, and other tax professionals to ensure local tax compliance and defends assessments; develops and maintains detailed audit work papers; utilizes data provided by state and local resources for discovery purposes; maintains confidentiality of tax information; participates in professional training to remain informed of federal, state, and local tax laws; and provides court testimony as necessary. This position assists the Deputy Commissioner Compliance with maintaining accurate audit program data for Office budget preparation; monitors and reports progress against budget, designated performance measures, and unmet needs for the Audit program; completes research, compiles data, analyzes fiscal impact, and produces final product or remedy on special projects as assigned; maintains detailed records for use by both Commissioner of the Revenue staff and County staff. This position acts as working supervisor in absence of the Deputy Commissioner Compliance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in business, management, finance or a related field and a minimum of three years experience in taxation or finance. Must have excellent communication, research and analytical skills, knowledge of business structures and business income taxes (both Federal and Virginia), and general accounting abilities. Must have thorough knowledge of automated systems along with direct customer service experience. Must be flexible and have the ability to independently exercise good professional judgment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be proficient in Microsoft office applications. Must have the ability to tour commercial facilities of all types.  This position is open to internal candidates within the Commissioner of the Revenue's Office only.
