Description of Occupational Work

This class series uses two levels in the Health and Human Services occupational group, Pastoral Services occupational series and describes work applying the principles, practices, standards, techniques, theories, and concepts of theology, ministering religious services, religious counseling and pastoral care to individuals and families at a state institution.  

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts religious services such as communion, confession, weddings, baptisms and funerals.
     
  • Plans and schedules religious programs and instruction provided by community volunteers.
     
  • Counsels individuals and families on a regular basis and in times of crisis.
     
  • Ensures moral and spiritual support on a consistent and emergency basis.
     
  • Maximizes benefits of volunteer programs.
     
  • Participates with other staff professionals to provide holistic care.

Levels of Work

Chaplain I

This level performs the full range of essential functions.

Chaplain II

This level is responsible for supervising and participating in moral and spiritual support programs for individuals. 

  • Receives supervision from an administrative superior.
  • Assesses and ensures that religious programs meet the spiritual needs of individuals.
  • Ensures that the religious program is compatible with and complementary to other care and treatment programs and security requirements.
  • Provides supervision, guidance and training for subordinate staff and volunteers.
  • Encourages, develops and supervises volunteer programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The intent of the listed knowledge, skills and abilities is to give a general indication of the core requirements for all positions in the class series; therefore, the KSA’s listed are not exhaustive or necessarily inclusive of the requirements of every position in the class.

  • Knowledge of ecclesiastical theories and practices.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques applicable to clinical and/or correctional pastoral work.
  • Skill in dealing with stress and anti-social behavior.
  • Ability to gain the confidence and cooperation of people suffering physical and emotional trauma and social alienation.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, conduct and/or supervise multiple activities often involving volunteer help.

In addition to the above knowledge, skills and abilities, the Chaplain II requires

  • Knowledge of theories of human development, of the causes of human behavior, and of counseling techniques.
  • Knowledge of the basic concepts and rituals of the world's major religions.
  • Knowledge of the agency's goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge of the agency's practices and policies.
  • Skill in crisis intervention.
  • Skill in identifying and mitigating diverse and/or conflicting views and priorities.
  • Skill in one-to-one and group counseling.
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy and compassion.
  • Ability to develop and train subordinate personnel and volunteers to their fullest potential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of religious oriented organizations and individuals in the community.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Chaplain II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Possession of a Masters degree or higher in Divinity or related field.
  2. Possession of a ecclesiastical endorsement by a recognized religious denomination and approval by that body for institutional ministry.
  3. Six months experience in clinical or institutional pastoral work.
  4. Six months experience in individual or group counseling.
