Summary Statement

A class incumbent is responsible for acting as liaison with private and public community employment resources in the securing of jobs for juveniles assigned to a youth rehabilitation institution.

Nature and Scope

The class incumbent reports to the Superintendent of Ferris. Other positions reporting in to the same superior are the Treatment Superintendent, Security Superintendent, and Recreation Supervisor. The class incumbent is responsible for providing follow-up services to 10-20 students working in the community or on the campus. An incumbent works with the other state agencies to obtain necessary documents and funding for youths and acts as a liaison with community programs to locate jobs for Ferris youths referred to the program by a counselor. The incumbent participates with the community agency by attending interviews as the contact person if any problems arise after a youth is placed. In addition, the incumbent arranges for students'  transportation to training and/or job sites.  Work at this level involves providing individual and group counseling to participants in regard to work-related attitudes and behaviors. The class incumbent is also responsible for maintaining records on the number of program referrals, placements in training and employment, and length of employment. The incumbent has contact with community employment/training providers regarding training and/or placement needs, employers regarding youths, and to arrange for speakers.

Essential Functions

  • Acts as liaison with community organizations to arrange training and/or job placement services for students referred to the program.
     
  • Works with state agency to obtain necessary documents, i.e. working papers and funding for youths.
     
  • Attends interview with community agency as the "program contact person" if any problems arise after a youth is hired.
     
  • Arranges for transportation of youths to training and assists in making arrangements to job sites.
     
  • Conducts weekly on-site visits to discuss youths problems and/or progress with employer.
     
  • Provides individual and group counseling, to program participants, regarding work related attitudes and behaviors.
     
  • Maintains program records on the number of referrals, placements in training and employment, and length of youth's employment.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Work Service Program Coordinator
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
  1. Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Six months experience in case management which includes assessing, planning, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating options and services to meet an individual's human service needs.
  3. Six months experience in narrative report writing. 
  4. Knowledge of career counseling which includes assisting hard to serve job seekers to develop realistic and achievable employment goals; interviewing to obtain facts and explore issues; identifying obstacles or barriers to employment and jointly formulating employability development plans directed at employment outcomes.
  5. Knowledge of child and adolescent behavior.
