This is activity and rehabilitative service administration work directing the planning implementation of occupational, recreational and creative arts therapies and sheltered workshop programs at a state hospital.
Directs the work of 35 - 45 supervisory, professional and paraprofessional employees.
Nature and Scope
An incumbent in this class is responsible for directing all activity therapy programs and rehabilitative services at a state institution. A class incumbent reports to the Deputy Director of Professional Services who also oversees the clinical, psychology, social service and nursing departments. Work involves coordinating the provision of therapeutic programs, rehabilitative services and leisure time activity to meet the needs of patients during day time hours. The class incumbent is responsible for overseeing and directing the planning design, implementation and operation of sheltered workshop, occupational, recreational, and creative arts therapy programs.

Plans, directs and coordinates therapy/rehabilitative services department activities with other departments.
Recruits, hires, trains, assigns, previews and evaluates the work of staff engaged in planning and implementing the programs and activities; plans, develops and schedules an on-going program of staff development for activities personnel.
Assures the provision of appropriate programs and activities and adherence to established policies and standards in the provision of activities personnel.
Maintains liaison with community groups and resources to encourage their participation in special events and the integration of department programs and activities with community resources.
Maintains statistical and other records on the utilization of activity therapies and rehabilitative services and prepares reports on programs and operations.
Develops a budget of anticipated program expenditures for staff, supplies materials and equipment; monitors expenditures and use of supplies and equipment.
Evaluates program effectiveness and oversees the implementation of new programs, policies and procedures.

Knowledge of managerial principles and practices.
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, materials and equipment used in occupational, recreational and creative arts therapy programs and in the sheltered workshop.
Knowledge of administrative procedures and records systems used to evaluate programs.
Knowledge of community resources.
Ability to plan, direct, review and evaluate the work of staff engaged in planning and implementing such programs as recreation activities, creative arts, occupational therapy, sheltered employment and work activities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Therapy and Rehabilitation Services Director Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Three years experience in health or human services work such as applying theories, principles, laws and practices of health or human services programs and services that assist with and improve life for individuals, families, or communities such as financial support, employment, unemployment, housing, health care, disease prevention, substance abuse, child protective services, physical/mental health treatment and prevention or rehabilitation.
Six months experience in health or human services program administration such as overseeing and directing the development, implementation and evaluation of health or human services programs and services; planning and establishing short and long range program goals and objectives. Providing advice to other agency organizational units through consultation.
Six months experience in developing policies and procedures.
Six months experience in staff supervision of two or more employees which includes to plan, assign, review, discipline, recommend hire, promotion, termination and administer performance plans and reviews.
Knowledge of budget management and control which includes managing a budget for the purpose of keeping expenditures within the limitations of available appropriations and available revenue and maintaining, monitoring, projecting and controlling a budget within set policies and procedures.
