Description of Occupational Work

This class series uses two levels of work in the Health and Human Services Occupational Group, Human Services Series and describes work providing family therapy for families in severe crisis, including families at high risk of disruption due to delinquency, drug abuse, child abuse, neglect, dependency, mental disorder, and/or functional disabilities.

Essential Functions

  • Intervenes in family crisis situations.
     
  • Provides on-going clinical assessment and treatment.
     
  • Develops and implements treatment plans.
     
  • Assesses progress and recommends appropriate strategies for continual functional improvement within the family.
     
  • Conducts individual and family therapy sessions.
     
  • Prepares clinical reports and documentation of progress towards goals of families and clients.
     
  • Provides on-going consultation with professional staff.

Levels of Work

Family Crisis Therapist

The first level in the family crisis therapy series performs the full range of essential functions.
  • Reports to an administrative superior.
  • Makes recommendations for improving division/department policy/procedures in delivering services to families.

Family Crisis Therapist Supervisor

This is the supervisory level in the family crisis therapy series responsible for overseeing and monitoring program operations for intervention services.

  • Provides administrative supervision to Family Crisis Therapists and administrative support staff.
  • Supervision is exercised over two or more merit full time positions per Merit Rule 5.1460. The elements of supervision include planning, assigning, reviewing and evaluating performance, training and recommending hire, fire and discipline.
  • Initiates and directs program development activities with other closely linked programs; monitors and evaluates the program and directs the development and implementation of corrective action plans.
  • Oversees the day to day program activities at each site to ensure consistency with overall program goals.
  • Coordinates services with communities, deals with service delivery problems, refers subordinates to alternative resources, and receives feedback.
  • Plans and implements family crisis therapist staff services and activities; reviews caseload statistics. Resolves critical issues.
  • Conducts supervisory and planning conferences and unit meetings.
  • Participates with other management team members to develop immediate and long-range strategic plans.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of advanced family crisis intervention principles, theories, methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of crisis theory.
  • Knowledge of delinquent and other antisocial behaviors.
  • Knowledge of the effect that social, economic and psychological factors have on individual/family behavior.
  • Knowledge of individual/family growth and development.
  • Knowledge of casework practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of services available through governmental agencies and community based organizations.
  • Skill in conducting interviews of a sensitive nature.
  • Skill in applying principles/practices of crisis intervention.
  • Skill in conducting individual/family therapy sessions.
  • Ability to prepare/maintain accurate case records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

In addition to the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, the Family Crisis Therapist Supervisor requires:
  • Knowledge of program management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in program evaluation and analysis
  • Skill in program planning.
  • Ability to coordinate with management team and community programs in providing intervention services to families and children.
  • Ability to establish linkages/collaborate with other agencies.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Family Crisis Therapist Supervisor
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
  1. Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Behavioral or Social Science or related field. 
  2. Three years experience in case management which includes assessing, planning, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating options and services to meet an individuals human service needs .
  3. Three years experience in crisis intervention.
  4. Three years experience in making recommendations as part of a clients service plan such as clinical treatment, counseling, or determining eligibility for health or human services/benefits.
  5. Six months experience in health or human services work such as applying theories, principles, laws and practices of health or human services programs and services that assist with and improve life for individuals, families, or communities such as financial support, employment, unemployment, housing, health care, disease prevention, substance abuse, child protective services, physical/mental health treatment and prevention or rehabilitation.
  6. Three years experience in interpreting laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  7. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
  8. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
  9. Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
