The class incumbent is responsible for directing and managing the operation of the support services for a large State hospital, residential or long-term care facility.
Nature and Scope
The class incumbent reports to an administrative superior and is responsible for directing, coordinating and supervising the following support services: Housekeeping, Laundry, Food Services, Central Supply, Beauty Shop, Maintenance, Security, Garage and Communications and Mail. The incumbent develops and approves operating procedures, established immediate goals and assists in the development of long-range plans. A significant aspect of the work is the implementation of proper quality controls to ensure the delivery of services in accordance with Federal, State and JCAH licensure, certification standards.

Directs and coordinates the support services ensuring their smooth interaction in providing the needed services for the facility; schedules and establishes completion dates for on-going and special projects.
Supervises the work of subordinate, supervisory or managerial staff.
Monitors the expenditure of funds and identifies the budgetary needs of the support service area for operating expenses and long-range capital improvement.
Develops recommended operating policy in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures for each service area and delegates responsibility for carrying out procedures to the appropriate supervisor.
Prepares narrative or statistical reports regarding budgetary activity and the functions of the section.
Serves on various hospital committees for improved delivery of services and for beautification of the physical plan as well as for disposal of hazardous waste.
Delivers in-service seminars on health and safety to personnel in support services.
May participate with other management officials as a member of the bargaining team.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Hospital Support Services Administrator
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Three years experience in ensuring compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards for health care facilities.
Six months experience in budget management and control which includes managing a budget for the purpose of keeping expenditures within the limitations of available appropriations and available revenue and maintaining, monitoring, projecting and controlling a budget within set policies and procedures.
Six months experience in managing support services such as mail operations, fleet management, commissary, laundry operations, food service operations, plant maintenance operations, graphics and printing, or materials management.
Six months experience in operations management which includes planning, directing, coordinating, controlling and evaluating operations typically through subordinate supervisors.
Knowledge of contract management and control such as ensuring compliance with terms of contracts; negotiating changes to existing contracts.
