A class incumbent is involved in general groundskeeping and routine maintenance work on State grounds.
Nature and Scope
An incumbent functions under immediate supervision and is responsible for routine lawn, flower, shrub and tree care and seasonal activities such as snow/ice removal and leaf raking. Concurrently an incumbent picks up and removes litter/debris, furniture and other items; repairs and paints benches and tables; participates in maintaining driveways and parking lots as well as assisting trades personnel as assigned. Other aspects of work in this class may include working with clients and/or inmates assigned to groundskeeping activity.

Performs under close supervision routine maintenance of lawn, flowers, shrubs and trees involving planting, transplanting, weeding, mulching, pruning, mowing and trimming.
Removes snow/ice from driveways, steps and walkways; rakes leaves; removes trash, debris, materials and supplies.
Assists in the maintenance of driveways by sweeping, grading and repairing holes; painting and repairing tables and benches.
May assist trades personnel in painting, minor repairs as required.
Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and hand tools including mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, edgers, grass shears and trimmers.

Knowledge of basic gardening and grounds maintenance.

Ability to perform routine preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Groundskeeper I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Knowledge of operating groundskeeping or landscaping equipment such as mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, pruners, edgers, grass shears and trimmers.
