This class is responsible for a comprehensive highway equipment maintenance program at various facilities throughout the State.
Nature and Scope
An incumbent in this class reports to an administrative/technical supervisor and is responsible for a comprehensive equipment maintenance program at a vehicle maintenance facility. The incumbent controls all aspects of the facility including supervision of shop foreman and mechanics, scheduling, monitoring, training, interviewing, and evaluating all subordinate employees. The incumbent establishes new procedures and preventive maintenance schedules and coordinates them to meet maintenance and administrative needs. Inspects all vehicles and equipment to identify problems for possible damage, repair, or reinforcement. Evaluates new equipment and makes recommendations for purchase, discusses warranties, technical problems and procedures with superior. Develops replacement schedules. The incumbent coordinates with superiors all work rules, regulations, safety guidelines and procedures for employees.

Plans, schedules, supervises, trains, and provides technical assistance to shop staff involved in a comprehensive equipment maintenance program.
Evaluates equipment operation, maintenance and repair on a regular basis to identify problems and ensure technical acceptability.
Investigates, evaluates, and recommends the purchase of new equipment.
Serves as member of Certification Committee testing employees on proper use of equipment.
Assists in preparing all work rules, regulations, safety guidelines, procedures, and preventative maintenance plans.
Evaluates and recommends the most cost effective methods for providing equipment repair and maintenance for assigned facility.
May plan, schedule and direct the operation of auto parts room ensuring maintenance of proper inventory levels.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Highway Equipment Superintendent Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:
Six months experience in managing an equipment fleet including preventative maintenance, inventory management, repair, and replacement.
Six months experience in operating heavy equipment used in highway construction/maintenance.
Six months experience in staff supervision of two or more employees which includes to plan, assign, review, discipline, recommend hire, promotion, termination and administer performance plans and reviews.
