Summary Statement

This class is responsible for supervising the daily operations of a vocational trades shop.

Nature and Scope

Class incumbents report to an administrative superior. Incumbents are responsible for assigning, reviewing and evaluating the work of production staff and inmate production workers. Work includes training and instructing work force in one or more vocational trades or related support activities. An incumbent is responsible for preparing work orders, scheduling and estimating labor, materials and cost of jobs. Incumbents recommend new equipment and tools for budget requests, maintain inventory records and prepare reports pertaining to efficiency of inmate work force, inventory management and procurement of supplies and equipment. An incumbent interviews, hires/selects and schedules inmate workers. An incumbent responds to inquiries and complaints from customers relating to production and services.  Establishing effective working relationships with inmates and inspiring their confidence and cooperation is a significant aspect of the work. An incumbent manages customer inquiries and disputes relating to order placement, production scheduling, quality control, product delivery, billing and customer satisfaction benchmarks. This class will function in a high production volume "for profit" environment. The management of its work force will serve as an effective training ground for acquisition of marketable job skills.

Essential Functions

  • Assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of inmates and staff.
     
  • Teaches vocational training subjects in a specific trade(s) to inmates of correctional institution in a workshop.
     
  • Organizes the program of practical and technical instructions involving demonstration of skills required in the trade and lessons on principles, practices, methods, processes and terminology. Tests and evaluates achievements of inmates in technical knowledge and trade skills.
     
  • Conducts job estimates, prepares work orders and schedules work.
     
  • Purchases supplies, materials and equipment in accordance with policies and procedures.
                                                                             
  • Participates in budget preparation by recommending new equipment and tools for budget.
     
  • Interviews, hires/selects and schedules inmates for the shop.
     
  • Maintains a variety of records and prepares reports.

  • Knowledge of generalized principles, practices and methods used in one or more vocational trades and related support activities.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of related tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping and report writing practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of facility and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the development, presentation and supervision of one or more vocational training programs.
  • Skill in the application of the standard principles, practices, methods, materials and tools of the trade(s).
  • Ability to plan program(s) and instruct and supervise inmates in one or more vocational trades.
  • Ability to safely operate a variety of tools and equipment used in one or more vocational trades programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, vendors,  agency personnel, publicand subordinates.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Business Operations/Trades Instructor
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in business operations which includes the operation, coordination, and evaluation of non-professional business services.
  2. Six months experience in presenting training courses using a variety of training methods such as lecture, structured exercises, role play or group discussion as well as the use of training materials such as overheads, PowerPoint, handouts or videos.
  3. Six months experience in narrative report writing.
