Summary StatementThis class is responsible for supervising the daily operations of a vocational trades shop.
Nature and ScopeClass incumbents report to an administrative superior. Incumbents are responsible for assigning, reviewing and evaluating the work of production staff and inmate production workers. Work includes training and instructing work force in one or more vocational trades or related support activities. An incumbent is responsible for preparing work orders, scheduling and estimating labor, materials and cost of jobs. Incumbents recommend new equipment and tools for budget requests, maintain inventory records and prepare reports pertaining to efficiency of inmate work force, inventory management and procurement of supplies and equipment. An incumbent interviews, hires/selects and schedules inmate workers. An incumbent responds to inquiries and complaints from customers relating to production and services. Establishing effective working relationships with inmates and inspiring their confidence and cooperation is a significant aspect of the work. An incumbent manages customer inquiries and disputes relating to order placement, production scheduling, quality control, product delivery, billing and customer satisfaction benchmarks. This class will function in a high production volume "for profit" environment. The management of its work force will serve as an effective training ground for acquisition of marketable job skills.
