Summary Statement

A class incumbent is involved in the construction, repair, maintenance and modification of client seating/positioning systems at an institutional facility.

Nature and Scope

A class incumbent reports to a technical supervisor and is responsible for constructing and repairing wheelchairs with individualized seating systems and other adaptive equipment. A class incumbent performs routine inspections of wheelchairs and responds to priority requests. Work also includes maintenance of equipment, supplies and work records. A class incumbent may provide training/instructions to individuals on the use and care of wheelchairs.

  • Constructs, repairs and maintains wheelchairs with individualized seating systems for clients/patients in an institutional facility.
     
  • Constructs adaptive equipment for clients/patients upon recommendation of Occupational, Physical Therapy or other staff.
     
  • Performs preventative maintenance/inspection of wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs, and scooters and responds to priority requests.
     
  • Maintains equipment and supplies.
     
  • May train/instruct individuals on the use and care of wheelchairs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the maintenance and repair of wheelchairs and adaptive equipment.
  • Knowledge of the basic structure and available adaptations of wheelchairs.
  • Knowledge of the basic types of seating systems (modular, custom modular and foam in place/molded seat) and how they are constructed.
  • Knowledge of material and techniques used in the design of adaptive equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic client/patient needs.
  • Knowledge of tools and how they are used.
  • Skill in the use of necessary tools.
  • Skill in the use of chemical and plaster mixtures to form seating molds.
  • Skill in wheelchair construction.
  • Ability to analyze how wheelchair modifications will effect its overall usage.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of constructing, repairing and modifying wheelchairs and adaptive equipment.
  2. Knowledge of record keeping.
