Description of Occupational Work

This class series uses three levels of work in the Labor, Trades and Crafts Occupational Group, Custodial and Laundry Services Occupational Series and describes laundry work in a state institutional facility.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Operates washers, dryers, irons, extractors, conditioners, pressers and folding equipment.
     
  • Presses, folds, and stacks clothing, linens and other items either by hand or by operating various machines.
     
  • Sorts soiled laundry by color and type; pretreats if necessary.
     
  • Weighs and counts clothing, linens and other items and records count on production records.
     
  • May pick up laundry from and deliver to wards, mark laundry with names; mends laundry if necessary.
     
  • May clean machinery using various chemical solutions.

Levels of Work

Laundry Worker
 
The first level in the laundry series performs the full range of essential functions.

  • Reports to a Laundry Supervisor. 

Laundry Supervisor

This is the supervisory level responsible for supervising and participating in laundry functions to ensure work is completed on schedule.

  • Reports to an administrative superior.
  • Supervision is exercised over at least two or more merit, full time positions per Merit Rule 5.1460. The elements of supervision include planning, assigning, reviewing, evaluating, coaching, training, and recommending hire, fire and discipline.
  • Controls the workflow in a high volume laundry.
  • Performs various administrative and operational functions in the absence of the superior or subordinates.
  • Inspects laundry equipment and reports machinery breakdowns to the maintenance department.

Laundry Manager

This is the manager level responsible for managing a large institutional laundry operation.

  • Reports to a Hospital Administrator.
  • Plans and directs laundry operations.
  • Hires, trains and supervises laundry staff; plans and schedules work directly and through a lower level supervisor; teaches washroom science and the short formula to washroom employees.
  • Sets standards for production and quality of work performed. Studies operations and procedures and institutes changes within scope of authority.
  • Installs production controls on each laundry machine and programs computerized washers. Keeps production records to track amounts of linen and clothing processed and shipped to various locations; prepares reports of laundry activities.
  • Prepares purchase orders to maintain linen inventory and supply of cleaning chemicals.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The intent of the listed knowledge, skills and abilities is to give a general indication of the core requirements for all positions in the class series; therefore, the KSA's listed are not exhaustive or necessarily inclusive of the requirements of every position in the class.

  • Knowledge of the operation of various institutional laundry machines.
  • Knowledge of laundry processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of departmental rules, regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to record production counts.
  • Ability to operate institutional laundry machines in a safe manner.
  • Ability to mend torn linens and articles as required.

In addition to the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, the Laundry Supervisor requires:

  • Knowledge of large scale laundry methods, materials and practices including the operation and maintenance of washers, extractors, tumblers, presses, hand irons and work irons.
  • Knowledge of textiles and proper cleaning methods and chemicals.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping and report writing.
  • Knowledge of supervision.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, train, supervise and evaluate the work of others.
  • Ability to analyze problems in laundry production and to make changes and revisions in practices where warranted.
  • Ability to order supplies and repairs.

In addition to the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities, the Laundry Manager requires:

  • Knowledge of all phases of large-scale laundry operation, techniques and management.
  • Knowledge of newest laundry equipment and processes.
  • Knowledge of washroom formulas for clothing and linens and all types of chemicals used in washers.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of infection control.
  • Ability to plan, direct and administer the work of others.
  • Ability to apply cost savings ideas to the production process.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Laundry Supervisor
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  1. Six months experience in commercial or institutional laundry operations and equipment such as washers, dryers, extractors, tumblers, presses, hand or flat work irons.
  2. Six months experience in record keeping.
  3. Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
