Nature Of Work

Employees in this class are responsible for performing a variety of firefighting and rescue tasks which include driving and maintaining emergency equipment. Positions in this class require the provision of emergency medical care. Irrespective of rescue assignment, employees must maintain their combat firefighting readiness as they are subject to deployment in that capacity. Work is frequently performed under conditions where personal injury or injury to others can occur. Employees must be capable of reacting with speed and composure under these conditions and must exercise some initiative and independent judgment in determining proper actions to take. Under general supervision, employees are required to participate in training in order to maintain and increase proficiency in skills necessary to perform assigned duties. Work is usually performed on a 24 hour shift, including weekends and holidays and is reviewed through observation and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

  • Drives apparatus; conducts daily checks and performs routine maintenance and cleaning of apparatus.
  • Is responsible for maintenance of drugs and equipment, including daily and weekly inventories of stocks; monitors expiration dates of drugs; maintains the rescue module at a level of serviceability and cleanliness for transporting patients.
  • Maintains records and submits reports as required.
  • Performs Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and other emergency medical procedures; takes individuals' vital signs, records and evaluates to determine status; prepares individuals for transport and accompanies to hospital; trains others in emergency medical care as requested.
  • Performs station duties; participates in daily drills on both firefighting and rescue subjects.
  • Maintains proficiency in advanced life support techniques; maintains high level of continuing education in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and principles of patient handling.
  • Maintains current certification in CPR, ACLS, a nationally recognized trauma curriculum, and State Paramedic certification.
  • Occasionally participates in demonstrations for the general employees, citizens of Tampa, members of allied health services, and other Fire Rescue personnel.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: rescue methods and techniques; first aid and CPR techniques; emergency medical techniques, practices, supplies, and equipment; firefighting methods and terminology; characteristics of fire; standard firefighting and rescue tools and equipment and their use; search and rescue techniques and equipment; the street system and layout of the City.

Ability to: perform emergency patient care and CPR; communicate effectively orally, in writing and by use of hand signals; perform work requiring considerable physical exertion under hazardous conditions; work cooperatively and interact effectively with all types of people in a variety of situations; operate a variety of rescue, firefighting and when required, communications equipment.

Skill in: the use and care of all pertinent hand tools and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1 year of employment with Tampa Fire Rescue as a Firefighter or Driver Engineer.
  • Approval by Tampa Fire Rescue Medical Director.

Eligibility to Take Exam: Must be a current employee with Tampa Fire Rescue in a sworn capacity.

Eligibility for Promotion: One (1) year of employment with Tampa Fire Rescue in a sworn capacity. Approval by the Tampa Fire Rescue Medical Director

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of:

  • State of Florida, Department of Health, Bureau of EMS certification as a Paramedic.
  •  Valid Florida Class E or higher driver's license.
