Nature Of Work

An employee in this class of work is responsible for performing a variety of basic mechanical equipment, building and facility maintenance tasks at a state licensed water production facility. Employees also perform basic water treatment operations duties. Tasks are of average difficulty and include inspecting and performing basic preventative maintenance and minor repairs on water treatment and pumping equipment. Other tasks involve monitoring plant process control equipment, taking process readings and other related water treatment plant operation tasks and utility duties. Work is performed under general supervision requiring the exercise of some initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks and meeting time constraints. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion of tasks.

Examples of Duties

Assists in the basic maintenance and repair of equipment, motors and pumps used in the water treatment plant; performs routine chemical tests; adjusts chemical amounts and flows.

Inspects buildings, grounds and equipment for conformance to safety standards and requirements; replaces and/or repairs pneumatic and hydraulic tubing and hoses.

Performs sludge removal duties: operates and drives front-end loaders, dump trucks, and forklifts; climbs and works at heights; replaces valves and other miscellaneous equipment; installs and repairs small piping.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of: various areas of water treatment operations; basic mechanical maintenance, preventative maintenance and repair work; sludge removal activities; work related safety standards and precautions.

Ability to: perform basic water treatment operations functions; perform basic mechanical repairs on water treatment equipment and systems; comprehend high school level science and math; operate and drive front end loaders, dump trucks and forklifts; perform work requiring physical strength and endurance; lift 50 lbs; work at heights; understand and follow oral and written instruction; utilize basic safety practices; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Skill in: basic use of computers and software.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and one (1) year of work experience in maintenance and/or repair; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license. Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 18 months: a valid Florida Class “C” Drinking Water Treatment Operator’s License and certification for Basic Mechanical skills.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
