Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for special programs such as, theatre arts and fine arts, for participants of all ages and abilities at an assigned recreation center. Tasks are of average difficulty and include teaching, instructing, and participating in a variety of activities. Under general supervision, the employee in this class of work performs the assigned tasks independently. The employee is required to exercise some initiative and independent judgement in planning and conducting activities for all ages and abilities. The employee might be required to work varying schedules which might include nights and weekends, and to travel to various locations. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples of Duties

Plans, promotes, and conducts recreational activities; teaches and/or oversees theatre arts, fine arts and special events or programs; schedules center activities; counsels participants as necessary.  

Instructs participates in fine arts in areas such as pottery painting, glass fusion, etc.

Plans, organizes, and conducts diverse programs of special recreation activities designed to meet the needs of participants of all ages and abilities, such as music, arts and crafts, social recreation, and dramatics.

Performs clerical work; prepares and submits reports; verifies purchase orders and requisitions; takes orders and purchases supplies for activities; checks in and puts supplies away; receives monies from class participants; writes receipts for supplies and equipment; maintains records, logs, lists, and forms.

Inspects recreational facilities and equipment to ensure safety; enforces proper safety practices, and occupational safety rules and regulations; oversees operation of assigned area in absence of higher level workers; ensures security of building.

Directs visitors at center; answers phones and provides information concerning programs and use of centers.

Performs related work as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: fine art techniques, aids, and use and care of equipment applicable to a wide variety of creative arts, fine art, special events and special population activities; emotional and physical problems of the disabled and elderly.

Some knowledge of: first aid and CPR; basic records keeping.

Ability to: coordinate and conduct art activities; counsel and advise participants; maintain records and compile reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, community groups, and the general public; perform activities requiring light to moderate physical strength and endurance; plan and conduct creative and fine art programs and classes; work with all age groups and disabilities.

Skill in: administering first aid and CPR; care/maintenance of recreational equipment; operating power tools and sound and light systems.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school and completion of one (1) year of college with coursework in recreation, recreation therapy, physical education, leisure services, art, theater, or a closely related field, with one (1) year of experience in specialized recreation programs, preferably in an instructional  fine arts or theatrical performance capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a: Standard First Aid Certificate; CPR Certificate within six (6) months of appointment; valid Florida driver's license; some positions might require a Florida Commercial driver’s license, Class "C" with passenger endorsement within six (6) months of employment.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
