Nature Of Work

An employee in this class performs lead assignments and lays out and installs traffic pavement markings using paint and/or installs, maintains, and installs and replaces traffic control information and street name signs. Work is of average difficulty and includes operating a painting machine to install pre-marking layouts, paint parking spaces, mark traffic islands, and place temporary markings. Employees operate a grinding machine to remove existing markings and/or assists in assembly of traffic signal/signs and hardware, including application of reflective sheeting and plastic films to aluminum signs/blanks. Employees may place construction signs and barricades, repair signs in the field, upgrade signs at intersections, install signs at unsigned locations, and fabricate traffic control and information signs utilizing computer aided design (sign maker) and various techniques of reflective material. Work includes assisting others in order to develop proficiency in performing such tasks as sign layout and silk screen products. Employees are expected to operate fabricating equipment for applying sheeting to metal blanks and for screen processing various signs. Under general supervision, work is performed in accordance with established procedures and requires the exercise of reasonable initiative and independent judgment. Work is performed at times in hazardous traffic necessitating a high degree of awareness of surroundings to avoid injury to self or others and may require work in inclement weather conditions. Employees are subject to emergency response calls to replace essential signs such as stop and one-way signs and to barricade or patch potholes. Work is reviewed through observation of final product, reports submitted, and results obtained.

 

Examples of Duties

Acts as crew leader and participates in laying out and installing traffic pavement markings using paint or installing, maintaining, and replacing traffic control, information, and street name signs; operates light automotive work vehicle (car, pickup) and transports workers, tools, and equipment to and from job site.

Performs layout and pre-marking of center lines, lane lines, legends, and edge of pavement lines; installs pre-marking to provide reference for loop and traffic signal head installation; lays out and paints parking spaces on city streets and parking garages; paints and places glass beads on channelization islands and medians for easy recognition by the traveling public; installs temporary markings which will be replaced with thermoplastic markings to maintain necessary traffic control; performs routine maintenance and general repairs to painting equipment; grinds away traffic lines and marking to realign traffic lanes or change traffic patterns; installs traffic measuring devices (counters and hoses) to record traffic flow.

Installs traffic and stop signs following blueprints; places and installs construction signs and detour barricades for re-routing of traffic and road closures; inspects detour sites, and cleans and resets signs as necessary; repairs existing traffic sign locations as a result of such acts as accidents, vandalism, or weather; resets or replaces signs on posts, anchors hardware, and corrects any other deficiencies observed; upgrades signing at intersections with new signing; installs various signs at previously unsigned locations; checks for sight obstructions.

Operates sign maker to produce signs; operates PC to utilize CAD; operates light mechanical and shop equipment such as bench grinders, drill press, and power hack saw; operates CB radio or base station.

Instructs and trains subordinate crew member(s) or less senior employees in the performance of assigned tasks and operations and maintenance of required equipment; directs the placement and removal of safety devices and cleaning of work area; prepares and maintain records of work accomplishments; loads and unloads heavy items, including supplies, equipment, and materials manually in order to complete assigned duties.

Fabricates a limited variety of traffic control, information and street name signs; performs sign layouts to include letter size and/or picture determination, spacing, and composition; assists others to acquire skills in adjusting, maintaining, and performing minor repairs to sign fabricating equipment; prepares simple drawings and sketches and fabricates signs and decals; performs various tasks in reclaiming sights for use; operates squeeze roll and vacuum applicators for adhering reflecting sheeting to meter blanks.

May be required to work on special events crew as necessary, involving placement and maintenance of traffic control signs, barricades and other devices to reroute traffic and provide for safety of vehicular and pedestrian movement during special events such as parade, sporting events, concerts, etc.

Performs related work as required.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: methods, practices, materials, tools, and painting equipment used in traffic paving marking or sign fabrication, installation, and maintenance, depending on area of assignment.

Some knowledge of: basic record keeping; the process involved in producing signs on the computer; methods, principles, and practices utilized in graphics layout and design;

Considerable knowledge of: occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to: lead, assign, and inspect the work of others; operate and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to painting equipment, where required; operate sign fabrication equipment; understand and follow oral and written instructions and prepare and maintain simple records and reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; perform duties requiring physical strength, out of doors, and in inclement weather.

Skill in: operation, maintenance, and use of tools and painting equipment pertinent to assigned area; the operation and use of sign fabrication tools and equipment; taking field measurements using tape measure and other equipment as needed.  

 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school, with six (6) months of experience in traffic pavement marking or sign installation or in laying out and fabricating signs; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license; some positions may require a valid Florida Commercial driver’s license, Class “B”.

 

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
