Nature Of Work

Performs supervisory and technical police work in exercising specifically assigned administrative and command functions in any of the services or field-division units of TPD.

Examples of Duties

Acts as field commander or supervisor and participates in administering, managing and directing law enforcement activities of a specialized nature; supervises and conducts roll call, information dissemination and shift changeover procedures; conducts personnel and equipment inspections; supervises and provides assistance in the investigation of serious crimes and accidents, as necessary; reviews and edits documentation submitted by subordinate personnel for accuracy and completeness and to determine whether probable cause exists for arrest.

Performs and oversees performance of employee evaluations; advises subordinate employees in the application and interpretation of rules, regulations, policies, standard operating procedures and general orders of the department; assists in the training and career development of subordinate personnel; reviews and approves employee requests for overtime credit, vacation and compensatory leave time; ascertains that necessary personnel are assigned to problems; makes tactical plans and recommends solutions to problems encountered by subordinates; originates or reviews disciplinary actions and makes recommendations commensurate with offenses committed.

Maintains records and prepares reports as required.

Directs the operation in the absence or upon the request of a superior officer.

Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

(a) One (1) year of experience as a Police Sergeant.
(Individuals with less than 1 year may sit for the exam.)NOTE: All of the required experience must have been with the Tampa Police Department.

(b) Successful completion of three (3) years of college (90-semester or 136-quarter hours).(Individuals with 75 semester hours may sit for the exam)

All candidates must submit a copy of their degree or transcript (with signature and/or seal affixed) prior to the closing date. This also applies to candidates who may have applied for past examinations. Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.

Examination

  • 80% Written Test (Weighted - 80% multiple choice; 20% In-Basket).
  • 10% Education
  • 10% Seniority

    The written test will be a combination of a 80 multiple choice questions and 20 multiple-choice in-basket questions. Candidates must attain a minimum passing score of 70% on the written test. Employees who earn a passing score on the written test, will be granted education and seniority points consistent with Article 35.3.5.

    Date of the Written Test:  Tuesday, October 25, 2016, 2:00 p.m. at the Fire/Police Training Center, 116 S. 34th St, Room #112.
