The Department of Resource Management is a comprehensive agency comprised of the Public Works, Building and Safety, Planning Services, Environmental Health Services, Parks, and Administrative Services Divisions. The department provides for the well-being of Solano County's present and future residents and the public at-large through administration and enforcement of Federal, State, and Local laws and policies pertaining to transportation, building construction, land use planning, environmental health, and recreation.

The Building and Safety Services Division performs building plan reviews, issues building, and other construction related permits, performs inspections of permitted construction and building improvements for compliance with all applicable codes and regulations, and enforces mandated State and Federal Codes, as well as County adopted California Building Standards Codes.

The Position

The Building Inspector II inspects buildings and construction properties and reviews plans to ensure compliance with the County's adopted construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, zoning codes, and other applicable laws and codes; reads specifications, blue prints and construction drawings; interprets building codes, laws, rules, ordinances; prepares inspection reports and records. 

This recruitment is intended to fill Building Inspector II (Extra-Help) position.  Extra-help employees do not have rights to a regular position or continued employment and are excluded from civil service. The hours worked may be part-time or full-time, but hours cannot exceed more than 999 hours in a fiscal year.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience: Two (2) years of recent and continuous building inspection experience that includes scrutiny of carpentry, plumbing, mechanical and electrical work.

Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent with vocational or technical school training in one or more of the recognized trades and/or building inspection methods. See Document Submittal Requirements for more information.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires ICC Plumbing, Building Inspector, and Mechanical Inspector certifications.  See Document Submittal Requirements for more information.  An ICC/IAEI Electrical Inspector certification must be obtained within two years of appointment to the position.

Requires possession of a current, valid Class C California Drivers License as a condition of initial and continued employment. 
   
Requires passing a physical examination and a drug test as a condition of job hire.

Extra-help employees who work less than 29 hours per week do not typically receive or accrue benefits of regular employees during their period of employment. All extra-help employees accrue .034 hours of Paid Time Off for every full hour worked.

Selection Process

01/17/18 – Deadline to submit application and required documents.  

02/08/18 – Tentative date for oral board exam for most qualified applicants.

Based on the information provided in the application documents, the qualified applicants may be invited for further examination and will either be pre-scheduled by the Department of Human Resources or be invited to self-schedule. All applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. Depending upon the number of applications received, the selection process may consist of an initial application screening, a mandatory information meeting, a supplemental questionnaire assessment, a written and/or practical exam, an oral board exam, or any combination listed. Responses to supplemental questions may be used as screening and testing mechanisms and will be used to assess an applicant’s ability to advance in the process; as such, responses to supplemental questions should be treated as test examination responses. ICC Plumbing, Building Inspector, and Mechanical Inspector certifications and proof of vocational or technical school training in one ore more of the recognized trades and/or building inspection methods are required for this position. All candidates must submit a copy of the required certifications and a proof of the vocational or technical school training  by the final filing deadline. Candidates who fail to submit copies of the required documents by the final filing date will be disqualified from the recruitment.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:  Candidates who attended a college or university that is accredited by a foreign or non-U.S. accrediting agency must have their educational units evaluated by an educational evaluation service.  The result must be submitted to the Human Resources Department no later than the close of the recruitment.  Please contact the local college or university to learn where this service can be obtained.
