MISSION STATEMENT
The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s mission is to provide enriching recreation activities, maintain beautiful parks and preserve the environment for the well-being of our diverse community.

APPOINTMENT TYPE:   Provisional, Part-time (schedule to be arranged)
Provisional incumbents will be required to succeed in a Civil Service Examination process for this class in order to be considered for a permanent appointment.  This position is subject to budgetary constraints.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under direction, identifies and documents occupational safety hazards by periodic inspection and accident investigation to include direct observation of and interviewing employees and supervisors regarding work practices, equipment, exposures and physical conditions; writes recommended corrective actions with specific timelines to prevent injuries and comply with regulatory and industry standards; recommendations may include but are not limited to updating safety procedures, facilitating engineering and administrative controls, and addressing facility and equipment issues; reviews and updates existing policies and procedures to include reviewing regulatory and injury prevention standards, implementing peer review, and consulting with managers and employees; establishes and implements new safety programs by the same process; evaluates and selects equipment, furniture, and materials to ensure safe and/or ergonomic work environment and conditions; identifies needs for safety training from baseline inspections, accident trend analysis, and review of regulation requirements; develops and presents safety training to diverse audiences; reviews, analyzes, and monitors workers' compensation claims to ensure employees receive appropriate workers' compensation benefits, minimize costs, and analyze injury causation; analyze loss reports and other injury data to identify trends and target loss prevention activities; represents the Recreation and Park Department during regulatory inspections and compliance activities; and reviews and recommends improvements to facility design and construction to enhance safety and ensure regulatory compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires a baccalaureate degree in Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; AND
  2. Four (4) years of professional occupational safety experience such as implementing occupational safety programs, conducting worksite inspections and conducting safety training. (Weapons, Ordinance, and Systems Safety experience is not qualifying); AND
  3. possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

Substitutions:
1) A Master’s Degree in Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, or a closely related field may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.

2) A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in any major and certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) may substitute for the required education and experience described above.

Desirable Qualifications:
1.  Certified Safety Professional (CSP), preferred, or Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or demonstrated progress toward either certification as awarded by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.
2.  Prior experience administering, managing, and improving incident reporting and claim (occupational and public) programs and related litigation support.
3.  Prior experience administering, managing, and improving programs to investigate potential hazards, and identifying and vetting options for recommending corrective action.
4.  Prior experience administering, managing, improving periodic inspection programs.

Disaster Service Workers
