The Planning Department has one (1) 5291 Preservation Technical Specialist, Information Services Planner III opening in our Current Planning Division.
The Preservation Technical Specialist, Information Services Planner III, under general supervision, performs difficult and complex planning work in the areas of land use, zoning, development, urban design, and housing; provide general and specific planning information in a professional and courteous manner regarding land-use designations and Departmental policies and procedures, assist with Planning Code compliance requests from other City Departments and State agencies, distribute documents and applications, perform intake of plans and application submittals, and approval of some application and plans for over-the-counter permits. As the Preservation Technical Specialist, this positon also reviews discretionary permits and case applications in conformance with the City’s long-range planning and policy goals, as regulated by Articles 10 and 11 of the Planning Code.
Essential duties, but are not limited to:
Processing land use applications; conducting limited environmental reviews and/or coordinating environmental review processes;
Reviewing of building permit applications that entail the alteration of historical resources for compliance with the Planning Code, the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA);
Reviewing of land use applications such as Certificate of Appropriateness, Permits to Alter, Landmark Designations, Environmental Review Evaluations, Mills Act contracts;
Reviewing of cases associated with San Francisco’s role as a Certified Local Government (CLG), such as Section 106 review;
Assisting the public with the public computers, redirecting them to other agencies or departments for answers, if needed, and as necessary, following up by phone or email;
Preparing or assisting in the preparation of reports and planning studies; and
Performing other related duties as required.
In addition, the core work of this position is providing information directly to the public at the Planning Information Center (PIC), as well as by phone, email and correspondence. The PIC serves the general public as the primary access point to planning information and services. This position typically works 1-2 shifts per day at the PIC.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to:
Answering questions about all aspects of the Planning Department activities, including but not limited to Planning Code regulations, the General Plan, the Planning Commission, the Historic Preservation Commission, and other planning activities policies and procedures of the Department; and
Providing staff trainings and guidance to other planners regarding PIC activities, planning policies and procedures, and various topics related to providing technical advice to the general public.
Supervision Exercised: Planner III's may supervise the work of subordinate Planner I's and/or II's or administrative support staff and/or consultants.
Planner III’s may be required to attend meetings or participate in work-related activities outside of normal working hours (evenings and weekends) in various community locations. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver license, and may require specialized experience in order to perform department-specific planning duties.
Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university AND four (4) years (8,000 hours) of verifiable full-time-equivalent experience in an urban, city, regional and/or other related planning environment (such as transportation planning, environmental planning, architecture or urban design);
Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in City, Regional or Urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies or Environmental Studies AND two (2) years (4,000 hours) of verifiable full-time-equivalent experience in an urban, city, regional and/or other related planning environment (such as, but not limited to transportation planning, environmental planning, architecture, historic preservation or urban design).
Two (2) years of experience in History, Architectural History or Historic Architecture
