9924 Public Service Aide – Health Education Assistant

Temporary Exempt: This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer, and the duration of the position shall not exceed 24 months.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The San Francisco Department of Public Health’s Chinatown Public Health Center is accepting applications for one (1) part time position in class 9924 Public Service Aide. The Health Education Assistant will have hands-on experience in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating health education programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Reporting directly to the Health Education Manager at Chinatown Public Health Center, the Health Education Assistant will develop skills for and conduct planning, implementing and evaluating health education programs for monolingual Chinese speaking and limited English proficient immigrant population residing in San Francisco.
- Conduct patient outreach (e.g. prepare press releases for HE classes, participate in health center community fairs, make phone calls to patients who missed HE classes such as smoking cessation, CDSMP and cancer support groups)
- Perform data management tasks and use basic formulas to create tables and graphs
- Plan, monitor and disseminate project communications (e.g. emails, oral presentations) in a timely manner
- Assist with community engagement activities (e.g. patient recruitment, meeting set-up) and meeting logistics for CPR classes, cancer support groups, CDSMP classes
- Assist with website content development to highlight health system achievements
- Support activities to document patient "care experience" stories to improve health system
- Assist to plan, conduct and evaluate population based HE classes
- Translate and type health education materials into Chinese and/or English
- Able to work some evenings and weekends
- Other duties as identified or assigned
- Education: Currently enrolled or possession of a baccalaureate degree in an accredited college or certification program in health care, social service , health information technology, or field related to health care; AND
- Experience: Three (3) months (equivalent to 500 hours) of verifiable experience in a health or social service setting (including work as a volunteer, intern or trainee); AND
- Able to read, write and speak in English and Chinese
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to working with consumers of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Working knowledge of Microsoft software (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) in English and Chinese
- Must demonstrate positive interpersonal style, excellent interpersonal skills, present self in a confident manner and establish a positive presence with colleagues
- Project planning and coordination skills
- Strong team player, ability to work independently and as a team
- Good organizational and problem-solving skills, self-motivated and flexible

The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:

Disaster Service Workers
Note on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Some positions in the Department of Public Health will require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to gloves, gowns, eye and face protection, and face-fitting respirators. The requirement for the use of PPE may come on short or no notice. Facial hair or any condition that interferes with a face-fitting respirator’s seal (i.e. comes between the sealing surfaces of the respirator and the wearer’s bare skin) is not permitted when face-fitting respirators are worn, including during initial or periodic respirator fit-testing.
Employees who choose not to shave and do not have either American Disabilities Act (ADA) or Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Accommodations do not have the right to alternate work assignments or the option of using a loose-fitting Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) in place of a FaceFitting Respirator.
Medical Examination/Drug Testing:
