General Description

Under minimum direction, the 9922 Public Service Aide, Associate to Professionals performs a variety of duties requiring a high level of responsibility; carries out complex tasks relative to the performance of management functions; may be responsible for supervising subordinates; researches and analyzes data; investigates and advises in legal matters; and prepares legal documents.

Examples of Duties:

Water Enterprise Natural Resources & Land Management

Interns in the Natural Resources and Land Management Division earn their training through the various Land Management, Conservation, and Stewardship projects that are constantly occurring in the division. Interns will be able to choose from a wide array of projects in order to pick an environment that best suits their career path in land resource management. The trainings can range from researching methods of public outreach and education to navigating through the diverse obstacles of land management and wildlife conservation. Interns will work independently and with NRLM staff to gain experience of working with local, regional, and federal regulations in a knowledgeable and guiding environment.

Public Utilities Commission External Affairs Community Benefits

Under supervision, the intern will assist with the Communications Outreach and Education Program, collateral development outreach, and education: coordinating logistics, presentation skills, developing key messages, drafting talking points, event coordination and staffing Project Management, project planning, database development and management, record management and retention

Public Utilities Commission Business Services Financial Services

Training will be provided in assisting management functions of the Financial Services Department and will carry out complex tasks on a limited basis in direct support of professional level personnel. The intern will be trained to process Accounting payments and to do research and compiling data, preparation of related reports and documents using Excel spreadsheets, and EIS.

Public Utilities Commission Business Services Information Technology Services

The intern will be trained to assist in SFPUC’s technology refresh program, performing desktop upgrades and deployment. In addition, they will be providing 1st level help desk technical support including handling calls and resolving issues over the phone; desktop, printer, and other computer peripheral installation and support; desktop application support; equipment disposal assistance.

Public Utilities Commission General Manager Real Estate Services

Public Service Aides will be trained in real estate agreement drafting and negotiation principles, insurance principles, document management principles and lease administration. Public Service Aides will learn to draft and review contracts and legal documents that comport with departmental policies. Upon completion of the training program, incumbent will be qualified to work in any contract, real estate or real property office.

Public Service Aides will be trained on real estate research to support the Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP) Right of Way Manager on researching public rights of way, property ownership, easements, and past and current property uses. A big part of this research consists of knowing what to look for and where to look. The Public Service Aide will learn to read right of way maps and street dedication maps. Over time, the Public Service Aide will learn to produce reports based on his or her research more independently and to make basic determinations or recommendations regarding property rights.

Wastewater Enterprise CWP-Administration

The Administrative Intern has the opportunity to learn general and complex administrative functions, as well as specific skills, including but not limited to: Administrative support, reception, filing, proficiency on office equipment & MS Office suite, organizational skills, maintaining databases and more. This position will also learn various programs, utilized at Wastewater Enterprise and may perform a variety of complex duties that can change throughout the day. Typical duties of a Publis Service Aide - Administrative staff can include researching and compiling data, creating multiple reports, filing records, sending and receiving faxes, answering telephone calls, and relaying messages. Depending on the assignment, Public Service Aide - Administrative staff will learn more about the functional area and perform tasks specific to one or more of the following unit(s): Finance, Payroll, Purchasing/Procurement, Fleet, Human Resources, Communications, Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations. The WWE Recycled Water Operation Administrative Support will assist Wastewater staff in responding to treatment plant recycled water inquiries, customer development, permit processing, and compliance with State and Federal regulations, reporting and record keeping. This intern position will learn about operations and compliance and interact with plant operators, local businesses, and city departments and outside organizations representing this high-profile SFPUC program.

Water Enterprise Water Quality Administration

Type of training to be provided: Purchasing - including analyzing quotes and working with vendors, maintaining detailed purchasing records, and using computerized systems to process purchase orders. Assist with budget preparation, accounting, prepare reports for management, fleet operations, prepare charts and graphs for presentations, assist in processing and monitoring of contracts and contract certification processes, input and maintain databases, conduct field surveys and carry out routine research. Prepare agenda items, attend department meetings, assist with the development of policies and procedures, assist in managing office and coordination of clerical activities, participate in data processing, inventory control, and facilities management, assist with human resources-related tasks including personnel recruitment and filing related paperwork. Perform bookkeeping and financial record-keeping operations, post and adjust balance entries.

Water Enterprise Water Quality

Public Service Aides will perform simple to increasingly more skilled field and laboratory tasks including chemical analyses and field monitoring duties as well as performs laboratory analytical tasks and professional duties to evaluate source and receiving waters, drinking water, and distribution/transmission system water quality, water and wastewater plant operations and to determine compliance with state regulations; conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses using a variety of laboratory instruments and wet chemistry, microbiological or toxicity bioassay techniques; keeps detailed and accurate analytical records; uses a laboratory information management system to track, control and report analytical data to variety of water quality clients; conforms to laboratory safe practices; assists bureau and laboratory personnel as necessary to achieve the goals of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of at least two years of college from an accredited college or university

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Good public relations skills;

2. Good written and verbal communications.

Selection Plan

Applications will be screened for relevant qualifying experience. Additional screening mechanisms may be implemented in order to determine candidates’ qualifications. Only those applicants who most closely meet the needs of the hiring department will be invited to participate in the selection process. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.

Conviction History

Disaster Service Workers
