Water Enterprise - 1657 Rollins Road, SF CA

Wastewater Enterprise - 750 Phelps Street, SF CA

Hetchy Power Enterprise - 651 Bryant Street or 525 Golden Gate Avenue, SF CA

Hetchy Water Division - Moccasin, CA (140 miles east of SF bay area)

Infrastructure - 525 Golden Gate Avenue, SF CA

External Affairs - 525 Golden Gate Avenue, SF CA

Business Services - 525 Golden Gate Avenue, SF CA

General Description:

Under minimum supervision, the 9920 Public Service Aide, Assistant to Professionals assists in the performance of a variety of duties related to the functions of the assigned departmental unit; carries out complex tasks on a limited basis in direct support of professional level personnel; may be responsible for researching and compiling data; assists in the preparation of related reports and documents; assists in the implementation of programs; assists in the investigation and mediation of legal matters.

Example of Duties

Hetch Hetchy Power Long Range Planning:

The intern will be trained to assist with the Materials Management System Updates Project Maximo fundamentals, Adpics, FAMIS, Excel, Word Projects include updating the materials management systems, procedures, and the methods used by City with regards to the physical inventories and the cycle counts for inventory control.

Hetch Hetchy Water Project Operations:

The intern position under the Hetch Hetchy Water and Power Capital Improvement Program will receive training in processing task orders, budget reallocations and staff additions; preparing biweekly summaries and detailed reports on contract task order budgets, expenditures and balances; performing budget analysis; becoming a power user with various business management programs, including PowerPoint, Solis, Maximo, Workflow, Excel; management of operating budget and office supply orders; and occasionally assisting with preparing and giving training presentations.

Public Utilities Commission Business Services Customer Services:

The intern will be trained to assist on how to use CC&B (SFPUC's water & wastewater billing system) - how to use Utility Star (SFPUC's Retail Electric billing system) - proper receipt of applications for service installations - how to collect, compile, and analyze data required for a variety of billing needs and reports - how to initiate field activities for service turn-ons and shut-offs, meter changes and installation changes by field service personnel and yard offices - how to handle requests, complaints, and inquiries regarding opening, discontinuing, increasing or installing water services, reducing sewer service charge, billing inquiries - initiating or handling correspondence or telephone contacts to consumers explaining discrepancies or abnormal billing or addressing consumer complaints and inquiries based on operating procedures, records, department rules and regulations, plumbing code and other sources.

Public Utilities Commission Business Services Financial Services:

The intern will be trained by the assigned supervisors in data processing, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and other computer software/programs. He or she will be trained to do document research and compile and prepare reports and accounting documents. The intern will be trained to create reports regarding water sales and revenue variances using customer billing databases and FAMIS. Work will include verifying funds, index codes, sub-object codes, vendor status, applying mandated policies and procedures from Controller's Office.

Public Utilities Commission Business Services Human Resource Services:

The goal of this internship is to teach trainees about standard business protocol to be successful in a work environment in the areas of human resources, accounting, finance, and office management. The trainee will learn about the different staff levels (peers, supervisors, division managers, general managers) and how to deal appropriately with each level. When assigned to human resources, the intern will learn about the onboarding process. When assigned to accounting, the skills acquired in finance-related areas include index codes, purchase orders and expense reports, budget activities include gathering data and variance reports, and possible progression to travel and expense reimbursements. In addition, the trainee’s duties will also include aspects of office management and administrative services, such as floor coordination and record coordination responsibilities. These tasks will help them learn organizational skills and attention to detail, as well as experience effectively interacting with a variety of staff.

Public Utilities Commission General Manager Real Estate Services:

The Public Service Aide will develop office and records management skills and will receive administrative and management assistant training. Over time, the incumbent will become comfortable in a professional work environment, develop internal and external communications skills, and improve organizational skills.

Wastewater Enterprise CWP-Administration:

Under direct supervision, the Administrative Intern has the opportunity to learn general and complex administrative functions, as well as specific skills, including: Administrative support, reception, filing, proficiency on office equipment & MS Office suite, organizational skills, maintaining databases and more. This position will also learn about various software utilized at Wastewater Enterprise and may perform a variety of duties that can change throughout the day. Typical duties of a Public Service Aide - Administrative staff can include researching and compiling data; create multiple reports, filing records, sending and receiving faxes, answering telephone calls, and relaying messages. Depending on the assignment, Public Service Aide - Administrative staff will learn more about the functional area and perform tasks specific to one or more of the following unit(s): Finance, Payroll, Purchasing/Procurement, Fleet, Human Resources, Communications, Engineering, Maintenance, and Operations.

Water Enterprise Water Quality Administration:

Type of training to be provided: Purchasing - including analyzing quotes and working with vendors, maintaining detailed purchasing records, and using computerized systems to process purchase orders. Assist with budget preparation, accounting, prepare reports for management, fleet operations, prepare charts and graphs for presentations, assist in processing and monitoring of contracts and contract certification processes, input and maintain databases, conduct field surveys and carry out routine research. Prepare agenda items, attend department meetings, assist with the development of policies and procedures, assist in managing office and coordination of clerical activities, participate in data processing, inventory control, and facilities management, assist with human resources-related tasks including personnel recruitment and filing related paperwork. Perform bookkeeping and financial record-keeping operations, post and adjust balance entries.

Water Enterprise Water Quality:

The intern will perform simple to increasingly more skilled field and laboratory tasks including chemical analyses and field monitoring duties as well as performs laboratory analytical tasks and professional duties to evaluate source and receiving waters, drinking water, and distribution/transmission system water quality, water and wastewater plant operations and to determine compliance with state regulations; conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses using a variety of laboratory instruments and wet chemistry, microbiological or toxicity bioassay techniques; keeps detailed and accurate analytical records; uses a laboratory information management system to track, control and report analytical data to variety of water quality clients; conforms to laboratory safe practices; assists bureau and laboratory personnel as necessary to achieve the goals of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

Selection Plan

Applications will be screened for relevant qualifying experience. Additional screening mechanisms may be implemented in order to determine candidates’ qualifications. Only those applicants who most closely meet the needs of the hiring department will be invited to participate in the selection process. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.

Conviction History
