Department Background:
The mission of the City and County of San Francisco Department of the Environment (SF Environment) is to improve, enhance, and preserve the environment, and to promote San Francisco’s long-term environmental sustainability. SF Environment includes: Zero Waste, Toxics Reduction, Environmental Justice, Clean Air Transportation, Climate Change, Energy, Green Building, Urban Forest and Public Information Programs.

Position Description:
The Environment Now Public Service Aide will function as a part of the Outreach and Communications team aimed at promoting the Department’s policies and initiatives to businesses and residents of San Francisco. Under minimum supervision, the Environmental Outreach Aide will assist the Environment Now Coordinators in developing and delivering educational outreach projects related to: zero waste, toxics reduction, clean transportation, energy efficiency and environmental justice.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
    •  Conduct outreach to residents, businesses and schools regarding the city’s environmental policies and programs, including: door-to-door canvassing, phone calling, event tabling, presenting, and surveying
    •  Facilitate meetings and workshops with businesses, neighborhood associations, parent-teacher organizations, and community groups
    •  Conduct on-site zero waste assessments and facilitate employee and resident trainings at businesses and apartments
    •  Provide technical assistance to businesses regarding sustainability practices
    •  Respond to public inquiries
    •  Research, collect, and compile data
    •  Assist in the preparation of reports and documents
    •  Assist in coordinating and scheduling outreach activities
    •  Participate in eco-literacy and project-related trainings
    •  Perform administrative support and other duties/tasks as required
    •  Follow the City departmental procedures
    Appointment Type:
    These positions (multiple vacancies will be filled) are Temporary-Exempt Appointments, with a duration of up to one (1) year.  A second year may be possible contingent upon City budget conditions and demonstrated competence and professionalism in the first year of employment.   Participation in this program does not guarantee a second year of employment or any future employment with the San Francisco Department of the Environment or the City and County of San Francisco.  This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive civil service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointment officer.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Training/Education:
    High school diploma or GED.

    Other Requirements:
    1.  Available to work some weekends and/or evenings as needed
    2.  Ability to work in all neighborhoods of San Francisco
    Desirable Qualifications:
    1.  Ability to stand and/or walk up to 75% of working hours
    2.  Knowledge of basic mathematics
    3.  Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written format
    4.  Customer service, sales, and/or outreach experience
    5.  Responsible, motivated, professional and able to work effectively on a team
    6.  Word processing, spreadsheet, database and internet proficiency
    7.  Enthusiasm to learn about environmental initiatives and opportunities in the environmental sector
    8.  Experience (volunteer or paid) in Zero Waste, Energy, Transportation or other specialty area in the environmental field
    9.  Fluency in a second language used commonly in San Francisco
    10.  Possession of a valid California driver’s license and willingness to drive a City-issued vehicle as needed (vehicle is provided)

        Selection Procedures

        Timeline:
        Online application filing deadline will conclude at 5pm on Friday, June 30th, 2017. Due to the volume of inquiries we receive, we are unable to give application status updates.         Stage 1 of the selection process will consist of an evaluation of applications.  Candidates who possess the required qualifications will then be invited to complete an assessment of relative job-related knowledge, skills and abilities (Stage 2).  Only those applicants most closely meeting the needs of the Department will be invited to participate in the interview selection process (Stage 3).  Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview.

        Conviction History

        As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:

            Disaster Service Workers
