APPOINTMENT TYPE: Temporary Exempt, Full Time not to exceed three (3) years – This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under general direction, the Associate Engineer performs complex electrical engineering work for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Fleet Engineering Section. The Associate Engineer will perform professional electrical design work of rolling stocks of vehicle procurements and vehicle rehabilitation projects. This position may act as Project Engineer, and will also work on system modifications of vehicles, approval of equal parts, maintenance support, and materials management.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Leads Junior and Assistant Engineers to prepare cost estimates and overall project budget.
  • Supervises consultants in the preparation of engineering studies, engineering reports, technical specifications, drawing and engineering analysis.
  • Prepares engineering documents, including advertisement for bids, instructions to bidders, detailed specifications, and contract bonds; negotiates contracts and contract modifications; and resolves clarifications from vendors and address their requests by issuing addendums.
  • Reviews proposals from vendors, manufacturers to ensure compliance with Federal, State and local regulations.
  • Reviews and analyzes submittals from vendors, manufactures for specification conformance and provides engineering recommendations.
  • Conducts periodic engineering meetings.
  • Assists in managing of vehicle procurements and other vehicle rehabilitation projects.
  • Analyzes and solves complex electrical and vehicle subsystems problems.
  • Evaluates complex engineering projects and complex vehicle electrical systems.
  • Conducts periodic field visits to maintenance facilities to research and document issues.
  • Resolves complex engineering and vehicle related problems.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Three (3) years verifiable professional electrical engineering experience, which includes two (2) years experience equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Electrical Engineer or higher; AND
  2. Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Electrical Engineering.

Working Conditions: Some positions may require specific lifting up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders; working in high places and confined spaces; exposure to various weather conditions and outdoors; bending, sitting, and walking for extended periods of time and over uneven surfaces. Positions in this class may also be required to work specific schedules which may include weekends, holidays, part time, nights, and/or overtime.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Twenty-four (24) months of experience in transit vehicle design and manufacturing. 
  • Twenty-four (24) months of experience in preparing or assisting in preparing studies, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans using AutoCAD and other software tools. 
  • Twenty-four (24) months of experience in preparing or assisting in the preparation of contract specifications, lists of materials, cost estimates, schedules, and progress payments. 
  • Knowledge of vehicle subsystems, including Lighting, Interior Climate Control, Wheelchair Loading System, Automatic Passenger Counter System, Surveillance System, Hybrid/Trolley Propulsion System and Vehicle CAN Communication system. 
  • Ability to read schematics and PLC ladder logic and troubleshoot electrical systems.

Disaster Service Workers

Benefits

All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, ranging from 7.5%-13.25% of compensation.
