SFO Museum was established by the Airport Commission in 1980 for the purposes of humanizing the Airport environment, providing visibility for the cultural life of San Francisco, and providing educational services for the traveling public. The Museum was granted initial accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums in 1999, reaccredited in 2005, and has the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. Today, SFO Museum features twenty-five galleries throughout the Airport’s terminals displaying a rotating schedule of approximately forty exhibitions annually on themes such as art, history, science, and popular culture. Additionally, the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Appointment Type: Temporary Exempt:
Employment is limited to 1,040 work-hours or six (6) months. Exempt employees are considered “at will” and serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.
Under general supervision, this position provides a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the preparation, production, installation and care of museum exhibits and works of art and performs related duties as required.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
1. Assists in construction and preparation of props, production and installation of individual and generic mounts, backgrounds and partitions.
2. Assists in museum lighting set-up.
3. Builds exhibition furniture and fine cabinets such as vitrines and showcases and has knowledge of the use of various power tools for woodwork and metal work.
4. Prepares exhibitions, packs, unpacks, installs and handles valuable art objects.
5. Mounts wall graphics, labels, photographs and other material as required.
6. Under supervision, cuts and assembles mats and frames for prints and drawings.
7. Utilizes standard museum techniques to protect art objects.
8. Must have good manual dexterity and have knowledge in special care and handling of irreplaceable and valuable objects.
9. Performs related duties as assigned.
1. Education: Possession of an Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Art, Fine Arts, Museum Studies or a related field; AND
2. Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Qualifying full time work experience (2000 hours equal one year) in the preparation, fabrication, installation and the care and handling of valuable art objects; making museum mounts for objects; building exhibition furniture and working closely with museum staff at a museum, gallery, or traveling exhibition program may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. One year of work experience equals to thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units.
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hire.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission will be required to undergo a criminal history check, including FBI fingerprints, in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be a basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine his/her ability to perform the essential functions of the job and/or the ability to meet the physical minimum requirements.
As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
