The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s mission is to provide enriching recreational activities, maintain beautiful parks, and preserve the environment for the well-being of everyone in our diverse community. 

About Us  The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department manages and maintains more than 220 parks, playgrounds, and open spaces in the city, including two outside of city limits:  Sharp Park in Pacifica and Camp Mather in the High Sierras.  Our 4,100-acre system includes 25 recreation centers, 9 swimming pools, 5 golf courses and numerous athletic facilities, including sports courts, ball diamonds, soccer fields and gymnasiums.  Included in the department’s responsibilities are Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower, the Marina Yacht Harbor, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Lake Merced. More than 2,000 talented individuals comprise our team, from gardeners, foresters and recreation leaders to park patrol officers, custodians, electricians, painters and more.  Our core mission, as it has been throughout our history, is to provide opportunities for San Francisco residents and visitors alike to gather, play, learn, relax, and enjoy nature in the city.  

Appointment Type Temporary Exempt / As-Needed  - will not result in a permanent civil service appointment from an eligible list.  These positions are seasonal for Summer 2017 (approximate period May 16 - August 11) and are subject to budgetary constraints. The basic work week is five (5) days. Shifts may include morning (pre-camp) and/or afternoon (after care) periods of time. Previous paid or  volunteer experience with the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department does not guarantee employment.

Assignments   All these assignments are at San Francisco Recreation & Park facilities. 

As-Needed/Seasonal Camp Assistants are assigned to work camps hosted by the four (4) main recreation competencies along with one support services group.. The following are brief descriptions of each competency and examples of programming:

  • Cultural Arts consists of Visual, Performing, Digital & Professional arts. These camps involves every aspect of the Arts including animation, ceramics, computer arts, crafts, creative writing, dance, digital audio, deejaying, drawing, fashion, film & video, graphic design, installation art, multimedia, music, painting, photography, printmaking, radio & internet broadcasting, robotics, science & technology, sculpture, sound design, songwriting, street art, textiles, theater, woodworking & urban gardening. Summer Camps include Pine Lake Outdoor day camp, Silver Tree Outdoor day camp, Performing arts camp (Pacific Arts &  Harvey Milk camps), Sharon Arts, Discovery camp & Randall (held @ Mission Arts) day camps.
  • Community Services - Early Childhood Recreation, After-School, Teens, and Adaptive Recreation (People with Disabilities). This competency is where recreation and human services intersect by providing programs and services to meet the needs of people at every stage of development. We also adapt all the Department's programs and services to include people with disabilities - most recently blind, visually impaired, deaf, hearing impaired and children on the autism spectrum. Summer camps include nine neighborhood day camps & Camp Everybody Plays (Everybody Plays/Teen City is a Therapeutic Recreation day camp for children on the autism spectrum).  
  • Leisure Services - This competency covers includes Fitness, aerobics, yoga, pilates, zumba, fitness and dance; waterfront sports: sailing, kayaking, paddling, surfing and fishing; Outdoors: camping, back packing, eco-adventures, rock climbing, nature exploration, and geocaching; Extreme Sports: skating, BMX, mountain bikes, and ski/snow boarding; Non-traditional: Cooking, Martial Arts, RC Cars and Boats, and LGBTQ programming.  Summer camps include Archery, Shred N’Butter, Fog City, Skateboard, Surfing, Jr. Mariner, Eco-Adventure, Wave Surfers, etc.
  • Sports & Athletics includes the following activities and camps: baseball, softball, boxing, flag football, golf,  soccer, futsol, tennis, track & field, volleyball, etc. Summer camps include  Sports Day camp, Girls Sports camp, Take 5 (variety of sports), LaCrosse, Flag Football, Put me in Coach, Soccer, Tennis, etc.                 
  • Recreation Resources and Permits serves in the following functions:  web based program registration (sfreconline.org), recreation and event logistic support,  open and close a recreation facility, facility monitoring, issue and enforce permits,  etc.

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

 

1. High School graduation/General Education Diploma (GED) or equivalent as of June 2017 (the hired candidate must submit a copy of his/her HS diploma/GED certificate before being approved to start work)  

2.  Ability to work with people of varied age groups and backgrounds;

3.  Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form;

4.  Present a neat, clean appearance at all times:

5.  Ability to relate to the camp participants in a friendly and helpful manner. 

 DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

A.  Three (3) months equivalent verifiable experience of working/volunteering with Youth (Ages 5 to 11) or Tots (Ages 4 and 5);

B.  Three (3) months equivalent verifiable customer service experience;

C.  First Aid, CPR and/or CERT/NERT (Citizen or Neighborhood) Emergency Response Team Training) certificate

Conviction History

Disaster Service Workers
