The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is the seventh largest school district in California, every year serving more than 57,000 students who speak more than 44 documented languages and attend one of our 131 schools across the city of San Francisco. Who We Want

The Lau Modified Consent Decree requires the San Francisco Unified School District to translate and interpret the district’s essential information into Vietnamese. The qualified candidate must be bi-lingual, bi-literate, and bi-cultural in both Vietnamese and English.

 

Funded by the Public Education Enrichment Fund (PEEF), the Vietnamese translator and interpreter will be part of the Translation and Interpretation Unit (TIU) to support families of SFUSD students whose home languages are identified as Vietnamese. The services are State and Federal Government requirements, and the expansion will: 1) address the growing demand of Vietnamese translation and interpretation services; 2) ensure equitable access of information for families across the District and engage families in meaningful conversations with the District and their schools.

Definition

Under direction the incumbent works in the productivity of all translated documents requested by the SFUSD Central Offices, including the Superintendent's Office Board of Education and School Sites; wide range of translated documents, from legal, technical, medical and educational materials; letters from the Superintendent, SFUSD handbooks and forms, Special Education, Research and Planning notifications, SFUSD policies, etc. Provides interpretation services to the SFUSD Central Services and school sites, as well as, all regular meetings of the Board of Education. The essential functions of this classification include accurate oral and written translation/interpretation ability (English to Vietnamese and Vietnamese to English) to be done simultaneously, facilitating conversations and formal speeches, as well as legal, Special Education, community/public relations and curriculum issues, with sensitivity to intercultural translation of certain words or phrases to assure complete understanding.

Distinguishing Features

The Parent and Community Involvement Coordinator serves as a liaison between the School District and parents with regard to a specific or special program. Positions in this class develop workshops, training sessions and other public relations materials in order to encourage communication with parents and the community and to increase parental involvement and understanding in the school processes.

Translation/Interpretation Skills (English to Vietnamese and Vietnamese to English)

  • As a translator, must have complete knowledge of both the source and target languages and an understanding of diverse genres in both languages.
  • Able to write effectively in both source and target languages. Must have knowledge of different styles of writing and principles of editing in both source and target language. Factors like editing and proper punctuation usage increase the value and readability of the translation.
  • Able to understand the use of various expressions, idioms, and specific vocabulary and become aware of diverse styles of writing, and social stratification of both source and target languages.
  • Knowledge of sentence structure of indirect speech and different figures of speech in the source and the target language, such as hyperbole, irony and understatement.
  • Able to use translation proficiency by using different sources such as bilingual dictionaries and encyclopedias.
  • Familiar with consistent terminology by reviewing documents and glossaries translated by the SFUSD Translation and Interpretation Unit.
  • Able to meet deadlines in a timely manner.

Accurate oral interpretations to be done simultaneously, facilitating conversations and formal speeches, as well as legal, Special Education community/public relations and curriculum issues, with sensitivity to intercultural translations of certain words or phrases to assure complete understanding.

  • Familiar with cultural concepts, usage and expressions of the foreign language being interpreted, including the dialects and accents of the foreign languages.
  • As an interpreter must have the ability to interpret in a manner which reflects the educational level and understanding of the person whose primary language is other than English.
  • Knowledge of specialized educational terms and concepts related to SFUSD.
  • Able to master the interpretation skills and knowledge base to quickly comprehend the source language and just as quickly re-express the information in the target language with fullness of meaning.
  • Ability to listen carefully and can recall the information instantly and accurately to transfer it into another language.
  • Familiarity with cultural differences to convey the appropriate meaning of culture-specific expressions.
  • Knowledge personal conduct that could discredit the District, school or themselves.
  • Must maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be willing to interpret everything said, accurately and faithfully without personal bias, and to avoid even the appearance of partiality.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, with staff and community in a multi-ethnic educational environment; develop and maintain good working relationships with school staffs, parents and the general public.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong computer skills on different computer programs in Vietnamese and English.

Knowledge of the San Francisco Unified School District, its functions, organization, policies and programs as related to parents and various communities; educational integration philosophy, programs and techniques; public information and community relations; community resources, advocacy and referral methods. 

Must be fluent in English/Vietnamese; available to work evenings (meetings are conducted between 5 - 8 pm Monday - Friday) and some weekends; travel to school sites, attend Board Meetings.

Ability to: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and community in a multi-ethnic educational environment; develop and maintain good working relationships with school staffs, parents and the general public; prepare accurate, concise public relations data and materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of college-level coursework in education, health education, outdoor education, social sciences, environmental science or a closely related field. (30 semester units or 45 quarter units equal one year); and
  • Three (3) years of verifiable experience working in the community with culturally, ethnically and socio-economically diverse populations, preferably in a school district setting.
  • Bilingual/Bi-literate Vietnamese-speaking required/must pass SFUSD Fluency exam.

Conviction History

As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:

  • Candidates applying for positions with the Unified School District and the Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.
  • Candidates applying for positions with the Recreation and Park Department may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under California Public Resources Code 5164.

Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.

Benefits

All employees hired on or after January 10, 2009 will be required (pursuant to San Francisco Charter Section A8.432) to contribute 2% of pre-tax compensation to fund retiree healthcare. In addition, most employees are required to make a member contribution towards retirement, ranging from 7.5%-13.25% of compensation.
