Introduction

APPOINTMENT TYPE:  Permanent - Exempt.   The San Francisco General Services Agency of Public Works has an opening for an exempt appointment in San Francisco.  This position is excluded by the Charter from competitive civil service examination process.  The successful candidate shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.  This position is funded by various Bond Programs, including the Earthquake Emergency Response Bond Program, PUC Sewer System Improvement Program and Healthcare Bond with an anticipated duration of up to three (3) years.  We are recruiting for a full-time 5265-Architectectural Associate I, Job Captain, with the ability to provide technical and/or design work as well as serve as a project Revit Coordinator on projects.  SF Public Works expects to convert this Permanent – Exempt position to a Permanent Civil Service Position for the successful candidate.

JOB DESCRIPTION:   San Francisco Public Works / Building Design & Construction (BDC) division is a full service Professional Architectural office that provides consulting services to various City agencies in San Francisco.  Public Works’ BDC is one of the few City Departments in the State of California that provide full Architectural design services.  Our work includes great projects such as Fire Houses, Libraries, Recreation Buildings, Parks, Public Safety buildings and Health Services buildings.  BDC currently have an opening for the position classified as 5265 Architectural Associate I – Job Captain with a specialized focused on REVIT coordination and production.

We are seeking motivated candidates for this position with a focus on strong construction document and technical experience and is highly qualified in REVIT.  The successful candidate should have expertise in projects of various sizes to assume project design responsibility for planning, development, and execution of planning & technical documentation, including consultant coordination.  Assignments will include work on Public Utilities Commission (PUC), Rec & Park and/or Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA) projects.  Project types may include; design and construction of new facilities, comprehensive renovations of existing facilities and/or rehabilitation of historic buildings.   

Under the direction of an Architect and/or Senior Architect, the focus of the Architectural Associate I will be design and production of construction documents for building projects.  The Architectural Associate I will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks and architectural duties which include, but are not limited to:

1. Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features and possible solutions and independently performs assignments.
2. Prepares and may supervise junior staff in the preparation of preliminary plans and detailed drawings for a wide variety of construction, adaptive reuse of historic buildings and/or seismic upgrades projects.
3.  Develops finished designs of small to medium sized projects and portions of designs for highly complex projects.
4. REVIT model coordination for building projects.
5. Assists the project architect in the preparation of contract specifications for various projects; coordinates design activities with those responsible for the structural, mechanical, and electrical design phases of such projects
6. May participates in conference and discussions with representatives of City departments and outside organizations relative to design, specifications, and functional use problems.
7. Provides preliminary Code & ADA analysis summaries for a project, including exiting diagrams for design development and construction documents.
8.  May assist in field observations during construction and assist in the administration of construction contracts by periodically attending on-site OAC meetings, field reviews and project meetings; may prepare and coordinate the review of shop drawings, submittals, and requests for information.  Provide technical support and project communications to team as required.
9. Assists in the development and advancement of junior staff members through coaching, training, and effective supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Education:

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture or an architecture related field such as Environmental Design or Interior Architecture, or a professional degree in Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture) from an accredited college or university.

Experience:

Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the architectural field including architectural design, architectural detailing, construction documents, programming, preliminary cost budgeting, specification coordination and review, construction administration, and field observation of architectural construction projects, all under the direction of a licensed architect. One (1) year must have been served as a job captain, project lead, or in some role of increased responsibility and supervision on a project. (Experience in a lower-level class (i.e., 5260 or 5261) is considered qualifying.)

License and Certification:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license

DESIRALBE QUALIFICATIONS:

Highly skilled in REVIT with an Autodesk REVIT training certificate with at least 6 years of verifiable experience coordinating and managing REVIT models in an architectural office.
      
Strong construction document and detailing experience
   
Construction administration experience, including a working knowledge of contract specifications.
  
A working knowledge of San Francisco & California Building Codes.

Highly skilled in AutoCAD demonstrated by at least 6 years of verifiable experience working with the software.

Supervisory experience over drafting and/or support staff

Selection Procedures
