Permanent Exempt (PEX). This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. The position is limited to a maximum of three years.

Our Workplace

San Francisco Public Works, Building Design & Construction (BDC) division has a full service professional architectural office that provides architectural services to City agencies in San Francisco.  The division is one of the few City departments in the State of California that provide full architectural design services. 

Our Need

We are currently recruiting for entry level positions classified as 5260 Architectural Assistant I. The 5260 Architectural Assistant I is the entry level class in the architectural series. Positions in class 5260 Architectural Assistant I are distinguished from those in class 5261 Architectural Assistant II in that the latter class performs more complex and responsible duties under general supervision and may exercise limited work direction over Class 5260 Architectural Assistant I.

About the position(s)

We are looking for an entry level Architectural Assistant with strong design and graphic skills. This is a great opportunity for an entry level professional who is interested in getting well rounded experience in aspects of architectural project delivery from design through construction. 

The successful candidate will perform entry-level architectural work in the office and in the field, under supervision, and in connection with preparation of architectural documents. In addition, this candidate may also have the opportunity to participate in early concept & schematic design presentation work, including SketchUp, Photoshop and presentation documents as well as further project development through design development and construction documents.  

The candidate will have the opportunity to visit project sites, make routine field observations of projects under construction to assure conformance with plans and specifications.

Minimum Qualifications

These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification.  Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.

Education:

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Architecture/Landscape Architecture or an architecture/landscape architecture related field (such as Environmental Design or Interior Architecture) from an accredited college or university.

Experience:

License and Certification:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Substitution:

A professional degree in Architecture/Landscape Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture/Landscape Architecture or Master of Architecture/Landscape Architecture) from an accredited college or university may substitute for the required education.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.

  • Ability to provide preliminary architectural design at a junior to mid-level design level.
  • Skilled in REVIT and/or AutoCAD.
  • Skilled in SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator, and PowerPoint
  • Architectural rendering skills a plus
  • Ability to sketch out ideas by hand
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with ease.

Submission of a 10-page (maximum) pdf portfolio of selected work is highly recommended.

Conviction History

As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Disaster Service Workers
