POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

A Deputy Sheriff performs a variety of duties relating to the custody and supervision of inmates in the San Francisco County Jail system, organizing jail work programs and general law enforcement duties. Assignments may be to any one of three divisions: Custody Division, Field & Support Services Division, Administration and Programs Division. Duties may include booking and processing inmates; controlling and supervising the activities of inmates; operating communication equipment; monitoring and controlling movement of all personnel and vehicles entering and exiting facilities; maintaining internal and perimeter jail, court or building security; responding to emergencies; preparing and maintaining records; and performing other duties as required. Shift work, weekend work and overtime may be required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

1.  Current employment in class 8302 Deputy Sheriff I for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department; AND

2.  Completion of the 18-month probationary period in class 8302 Deputy Sheriff I, including satisfactory completion of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department entry-level training program.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

 

Training and Experience Evaluation

 

A training and experience evaluation will be completed to determine whether the Deputy Sheriff I incumbents have met all of the requirements for class 8504 Deputy Sheriff.

 

ELIGIBLE LIST

 

Deputy Sheriff I incumbents who have met the requirements for class 8504 will be placed on the eligible list in alphabetical order.

 

The Certification Rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three. The duration of the candidates’ eligibility on the list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months. The expiration date may be extended by the Appointing Officer with the approval of the Human Resources Director. The number of refusals allowed is zero.

 

The eligible list resulting from this examination is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals) as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.

Conviction History

As part of the selection process an image of your fingerprints will be captured and sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) history will disqualify you as a candidate based on the specific requirements of the position to which you are applying. If selected for fingerprinting, the hiring department will contact you to schedule an appointment.

Candidates applying for positions with the Unified School District and the Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.

Candidates applying for positions with the Recreation and Park Department may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under California Public Resources Code 5164.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
