Position Information: Essential Duties

The 7257 – Communications Line Supervisor l supervises installations, maintenance, and repair of communication systems, public safety systems, and street lights, directing of a group consisting of Electric Line Workers, Electric Line Helpers, and General Laborers.  

 

·         This includes reviewing work assignments; conducting site visits; determining scope and proper sequence of tasks for each job site; assessing location, staff, equipment and safety considerations needed to complete each assignment; and establishing the order of daily work and delegating tasks.

·         Supervises the installation of poles, overhead lines and underground cables by working with crew members digging holes, securing poles in a foundation, installing underground cables in a duct structure or conduit, and connecting lines; isolating and overseeing the repair of circuit problems; inspecting completed work for accuracy and quality of workmanship. This includes giving instructions on proper methods to secure and set up work sites to ensure safety of crew and public.

·         Trains line workers in the safe and proper installation of poles, overhead lines and underground cables to support the public safety communication network and the city owned street lighting systems

·         Prepares estimates, performs inspections, and orders materials for work requested by other city departments or third party entities.

·         Makes and interprets maps, sketches and drawings for installation of overhead and underground communication systems and city-owned street lighting systems to reflect accurate lay out plans for installation or changes in the system and to determine correct placement of equipment and materials.

·         Reviews timesheets, vehicle inspections, and work logs for accuracy and accountability.

·         Assists in the development and advancement of subordinates through training and effective use of employment development programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years experience installing, maintaining and repairing overhead and underground lines; experience must include at least one (1) year working on street lighting system.

Desirable Qualifications:

·         Knowledge of MAXIMO purchasing procedures
·         Experience with Fleet Procurement and Maintenance

Selection Procedures

Trades Supervisory Written Examination: (Weight: 50%) 

Candidates will be administered a written multiple-choice examination that includes test items that relate to various supervisory practices and procedures (e.g., directing subordinates, delegating tasks to subordinates, providing customer service, demonstrating appropriate supervisory/leadership behavior, addressing and/or evaluating subordinate issues, behavior and performance, etc.) and well as reading comprehension items.

This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.

The score you achieve on this examination shall be valid and 'banked' for three years, starting from the date of the examination. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to take this test again should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which this particular test is used. Please note this test is used for other supervisory classes therefore your test score may be applied to one or more of these classes if you choose to apply to future recruitments. If the test for this future announcement is held within one year of the date of this examination, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after one year, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the test. Re-testing is permitted no sooner than one year from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that, should you re-test, your re-test score would become your official score since it is the most recent.

Oral Examination: (Weight: 50%)

A passing score must be achieved on the Trade Supervisory Exam (TSE) order to continue in the selection process. Candidates pass the TSE will be invited to participate in an oral/performance examination designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to:  Streetlight maintenance and construction, troubleshooting electrical circuitry, inspection of jobsites, and reviewing of engineering drawings and site plans.

Certification: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of the Three(3).  Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.

Eligible List: The eligible list resulting from this examination is subject to change after adoption (e.g., as a result of appeals), as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of six (6) months, and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director. Upon approval of the Human Resource Director (see Civil Service Rule 111A.26.5), the eligible list resulting from this announcement may be used by other departments that also use this classification or a similar classification. Conviction History

As a finalist for a job, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction (or arrest, in limited circumstances) conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you are a finalist. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances, such as:

  • Candidates applying for positions with the Unified School District and the Community College District may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under the California Education Code.
  • Candidates applying for positions with the Recreation and Park Department may be disqualified from consideration should their conviction history not meet the standards established under California Public Resources Code 5164.

Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City.

Disaster Service Workers

Safety Sensitive Positions Requirements:
