Under general direction, the 3634 Librarian III is responsible for managing complex or multiple operations or programs. The essential functions of the classification include: managing and supervising operations through coordination with other staff, departments, divisions and library administration; planning, coordinating, assigning and supervising, through subordinate supervisors, the work of library staff; providing direction, completing evaluations, reviewing activities, assisting staff, providing and coordinating training; providing information and direction on the use of print, non-print, and electronic resources; interpreting library policy and priorities responding to inquiries, suggestions and concerns and recommending and implementing new procedures, guidelines or policies; managing, supervising and performing reference work; managing and supervising the planning, coordination and presentation of programing, training and exhibits; making presentations and consulting to promote the use of and interest in the public library system; coordinating and overseeing the selection, acquisition, cataloging, processing, receiving and preservation of library materials; contributing to policy formulation and implementation; implementing library systems/programs and providing management for change; overseeing the management of collections; managing and promoting the development of positive community relations; overseeing, preparing and managing budgets, reviewing expenditures and making recommendations; conducting business with vendors and other library and city departments on contracts and purchase orders; communicating effectively verbally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner; and other duties as assigned.
1. Possession of a Master's Degree in library and information studies (e.g. MLS/MLIS) from a college or university program accredited by the American Library Association (verification/proof of education is required at time of filing application);
2. Four (4) years of experience as a professional librarian, including at least two (2) years supervising other professional librarians (verification/proof of experience is required at time of filing application).

1. Some positions require fluency in a variety of languages depending upon the department's bilingual needs. Eligibles who pass the bilingual proficiency test will be considered for bilingual positions. Applicants must indicate on the application form the language(s) in which they claim proficiency.
2. Some positions require 12 months (2,000 hours) of verifiable experience performing the duties of a Children’s and Youth Services Librarian.

**Verification of library experience gained by employees working for the San Francisco Public Library will be automatically verified by a review of the Human Resources Information System data. If you are employed by the San Francisco Public Library, you do not need to submit experience verification, however, if you have other qualifying experience from another library that you are using to meet minimum qualifications, you do need to submit verification documents to support the outside work experience. Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation (Weight: 60%): Candidates will be prompted to complete a Supplemental Questionnaire as part of the online employment application. The Supplemental Questionnaire Evaluation is designed to measure knowledge, skills and/or abilities in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: knowledge of integrated library systems; information/reference resources; and functional areas within the library; management ability; analytical ability; supervisory ability; human relations ability; oral communication ability; written communication ability; technological ability and other related job-related areas.
Management Test Battery (Weight: 40%): Candidates will be invited to participate in a computer-based examination designed to measure competencies in job-related areas which may include but not be limited to: Problem Solving; Leadership; Decision Making; Interpersonal skill; Human Resources Management; Team Building; Communication; Conflict Management and Process Improvement. A passing score must be achieved on the Management Test Battery in order to continue in the selection process.
This is a standardized examination and, therefore, test questions and answers are not available for public inspection or review.
Scores attained on the Management Test Battery will be valid and 'banked' for three years, starting from the date of the examination. This means that, during this three-year time period, you will not be required to take the Management Test Battery. The Management Test Battery may be used for many other classes; therefore your test score may be applied to one or more of these classes if you choose to apply to future recruitments. If the selection process for the future announcement is held within one year of the date of this examination and it includes the Management Test Battery, your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However, after one year, you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) re-take the Management Test Battery.
