There are opportunities in the following departments:

Aircraft Noise Abatement:  The Aircraft Noise Abatement intern will assist in performing noise monitoring and flight tracking for State Noise Reporting, The Fly Quiet Program, Airport Directors Reports, and special tasks as needed by the Airport/ Community Roundtable. Working with elected officials, airlines, Airport Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration and the local communities for answers to complex questions on noise. Intern will monitor new air navigation procedures in use and being implemented under the Federal Aviation Administration's Next Gen program. Preferred candidate has experience with Word and Excel, good computer skills, and can learn new software. Aviation major student who is familiar with flight operations a plus.

Business and Finance- Revenue Development & Management:  The intern will gain knowledge of property management, tenant lease compliance oversight (bonds, accounts receivable, insurance, legal documentation) and airport tenant relations. Intern will provide assistance with and tenant inspections (pricing, Operation Hours, Sustainability practices, waste compliance). Intern may assist with the Airport’s Request For Proposal (RFP) program including public outreach. Preferred candidate has excellent communication skills and is a Business or Management major.

Bureau of Planning and Environmental Affairs – Wildlife:  The intern will assist the Airport Biologist in implementation of both the airfield Wildlife Hazard Management Plan (~20%) and the Recovery Action Plan for our population of endangered San Francisco garter snake (~80%).  Wildlife hazard management projects include:  bird point count surveys, data entry and analysis, risk analysis, and management strategy development.  Recovery Action Plan projects include:  monitoring habitat restoration projects for permit compliance, conducting surveys for listed species (California red-legged frog and San Francisco garter snake), and identifying future habitat restoration projects.  There will be an opportunity to develop and conduct an independent research project on a topic that furthers SFO’s environmental stewardship goals and is of interest to the intern.  Desired qualifications include: Students majoring in Biology, wildlife management, or related field, experience or interest in conducting field work in rugged, dirty conditions in unpredictable weather, species identification skills, ability to work safely in a noisy construction environment and on an active airfield, rigorous data collection abilities, close adherence to given instructions but also a curiosity for new ideas and approaches, and a desire to understand the complexities of urban wildlife management.  A background in field research, statistics, and/or data analysis techniques and software is a big plus.

Economic and Community Development -Social Media:  The Social Media intern will be responsible for maintaining and developing a social media strategy for SFO's Office of Employment and Community Partnerships, the section responsible for Airport Tenant jobs, community partnerships, and SFO Internships. Responsibilities will include implementing current ECP Social Media Calendar, developing a LinkedIn page, creating "How-To" instructional videos, and light event planning and event content development (slideshows, videos, and presentations). Preferred candidate is able to shoot and edit video content, has experience developing a maintaining one or more social media accounts, and has some experience in graphic design. Interest in workforce development and public speaking skills are also a plus, but not required.

Emergency Management:  The Emergency Management intern will work closely with three Emergency Management Coordinators and one Storekeeper who will assist in their development. The candidate will be given responsibilities to assist in the creation of the 2018 Full Scale Annual Exercise. They will also assist in training and the management of the Emergency Management resources; including the B-767 Aircraft, Mobile Command Vehicle (MCV) and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The intern will be involved in planning, scheduling, developing, documenting and coordinating multi agency meetings and Exercise Plan scenarios. Experience or knowledge of the National Incident Management System (NIMS), Incident Command System (ICS) or Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS) is preferred but not required as training will be available for the selected candidate. The intern should be proficient with Word, Excel and Power Point and have a basic ability to grasp today’s technology using smart tools, such as: phones, monitors and interface platforms. 

Employment and Quality Standards: Business and Employment Services:  The intern will assist in the engagement, training, monitoring, and registering all Airport vendors and tenants to utilize the Center’s new online talent recruiting and tracking system.  In this role the intern will have an opportunity to develop an action plan targeted to engage tenants to post their career opportunities on the Airport’s career page (flysfo.com/careers).   Most importantly the intern will create a training module that will enable representatives from these companies to full utilize the systems recruiting features.  Additionally, the intern will test and make necessary changes to the reporting features of the system.  Desired qualifications include: Students who are studying or interested in Business Analysis in particular working with data, Human Resources, Training and Development, or Marketing.  Experience or interest in conducting presentations, analyzing data, and creating written training materials would be highly beneficial.

Environmental Operations:  The intern will assist staff of the Airport’s Environmental Operations department and/or the Bay Pollution Prevention Program in various projects such as: assisting with routine tenant and contractor inspections to ensure environmental rules and regulations are being followed, assisting with creating and implementing environmental training/outreach programs, monitoring storm water collection systems and collecting samples when necessary, reviewing environmental documents and providing feedback, assisting with report writing and creating relevant charts/graphs, performing data entry, etc. Preferred candidate must be proficient in all Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), have good communication skills, be willing to interact with Airport staff, tenants, and contractors, have good writing skills, and be willing to occasionally work around moderately hazardous conditions such as active construction sites, open manholes, etc.

Environmental Policy & Sustainability:  The Environmental Policy & Sustainability intern will conduct data collection, analysis, reporting and outreach tasks associated with the Airport’s Zero Waste and Zero Carbon initiatives. This position will provide experience and mentorship in carbon accounting, lifecycle impact analysis, green business certification, environmental policy, community-based social marketing, and waste materials management. The intern will regularly interface with airport staff, tenants, and contractors to collect data and administer surveys. They will also update air quality emissions inventories and databases for solid waste hauling and ground support equipment. The desired qualifications include strong skills in technical and conversational writing, quantitative statistical analysis, and marketing and communication. The intern should also have a strong interest in environmental science, engineering, and policy and strong commitment to supporting organizations in achieving their sustainability, adaptation and resilience goals.

External Affairs: Aviation Development:  The intern will assist on projects related to the expansion of international flight activity at SFO. Intern may collect quantitative and qualitative data from marketing campaigns, perform market analysis and research on competition, and assist in marketing and advertising promotional activities, including social media.  Preferred candidate is comfortable utilizing social media channels, has an understanding of different marketing techniques, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and knowledge of MS Office.

External Affairs: Marketing & Communications:  No two days are ever the same in the MarComm department with responsibilities that run the gamut from corporate and internal communications to marketing campaigns to project management.  You’ll work side-by-side with SFO’s Marketing & Communications team in a fast paced and fun environment, allowing you the opportunity to grow your experience, hone your understanding, and apply your skills to real-time, meaningful projects and assignments. The MarComm intern will complete a project that supports SFO, but that is tailored around personal interests and skills. Past projects have included: producing an episode of Inside SFO, writing a social media strategy paper, developing new sections of flysfo.com, and developing a video script and shot list. Projects and assignments can include: writing articles, conducting interviews, taking pictures, shooting video, posting content on websites and social media, interpreting marketing and social media analytics. Preferred candidate has excellent communications skills, strong writing skills, an attention to detail, and familiarity with social media, photography and video production, web development and design.

Museum – Archives/Library, Museum collections:  The intern will work with both the Archives/Library and Museum collections, and assist with tasks such as accessioning, inventory, maintenance, housing/re-housing, and data entry.  Exhibition assistance such as soft packing, condition reporting, installation, and deinstallation may also be involved, and training will be provided.  Preferred candidate has strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ability to navigate both PC and MAC platforms, and is majoring in Museums Studies or Fine Arts. Familiarity with FileMaker Pro and experience with museum, libraries, or archives collections a plus.  Tasks may include heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) and climbing of ladders.

Reprographics - Graphic Design:  The intern will play an active role in SFO’s In House Graphic Design team and will have opportunity for meaningful input in design decisions, creating graphics and day-to-day design tasks. Preferred candidates have proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, etc.) and Microsoft Office. Experience with signage is a plus.
