Supplemental Questionnaire

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN INFORMATION THAT MAY AFFECT YOUR EXAMINATION SCORE AND RANK ON THE ELIGIBILE LIST:

The purpose of this Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) is to describe your training and experience as they relate to the knowledge, skills, and abilities linked to the 5291 Planner III (please refer to the job announcement for a more detailed description of these knowledge, skills and abilities).

Questions 1 through 5 will be used to assess possession of the minimum qualifications. 

Questions Q1 through Q3 will be evaluated and scored.  Only the information you provide in your answers to these questions will be evaluated to determine your score in the selection process for this position. No attachments or additional documents such as resumes, cover letters, hyperlinks/references to publications or employment applications will be considered (i.e. Writing ‘see resume’ or ’N/A’ is not a sufficient response).

The SQ will be presented to a review panel for an assessment and will be used to determine candidates' score and rank on the eligible list. This Supplemental Questionnaire will account for 100% of the total weight of the candidates’ final score.

Your score will be based on the quality of your responses. It is suggested that you review the questions before starting, prepare your narrative-style responses in a word processing document, and then paste them into the application.

The responses that you provide to this questionnaire should be consistent with the information on your application, and are subject to verification.

Please follow these instructions when answering the questions below:

• Provide your best or highest examples of work.
• Provide all information requested even if it may appear redundant. Each response is evaluated independently from the others.  You may need to repeat some information from one response to another in order to best respond to a given question.
• Do not write “See application” or "See resume" as a response.
• Use good writing skills.  Written communication skills are important.  Poor grammar, misspelling, or typographic errors can lead to a poor evaluation of your responses.
• Please be thorough but concise. Your written communication skills will be evaluated based on your responses.
• Panel members involved in the rating process will not have access to your application and resume, so it is important that your answers are comprehensive.
• Limit your response to each question to 1,000 words.

The SQ must be completed and submitted online with the application at the time of filing. Responses cannot be changed or edited after submission. Failure to provide complete responses to this supplemental questionnaire may result in rejection of the application.

3.  Have you been awarded a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in City, Regional or Urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies or Environmental Studies?

5.  How many years (1 year is equivalent to 2,000 work hours) of verifiable full time professional (i.e. paid) level of experience do you have in an urban, city, regional and/or other related planning environment (such as transportation planning, environmental planning, architecture or urban design)?

Q1:  Describe significant highlights and/or accomplishments from your work experience in an urban, city, regional, and/or related planning field(s) such as transportation planning, transportation demand management, environmental planning, land use planning, landscape architecture, engineering, policy development, urban design, architecture, historic preservation, waterfront planning, park planning, and natural resources management that has prepared you to be a Planner III.

Q2: Describe a specific planning or design project you played a primary role in advancing that was particularly challenging in terms of complexity, scale, public controversy, and/or associated issues.  Be specific about how you advanced the project and results, including design, policy, and other considerations. Describe how you balanced the needs of various stakeholders (e.g., architects, owners, the public, officials) towards a successful result.  Include in your response your specific role/function, the challenges you faced, and how those challenges were resolved.

Q3:  Describe your experience in communicating urban, city, regional, and/or related planning concepts such as transportation planning, transporation demand management, environmental planning, land use planning, architecture, historic preservation, waterfront planning, park planning, natural resource management, and/or urban design to a wide variety of public and/or private sector audiences (e.g. stakeholders, local, state or federal agencies, commissions, clients, and/or the general public). Include in your response your role/function in communicating the concepts and the communication methods used.
