3279 RECREATION LEADER SKILLS SELF-ASSESSMENT SURVEY

Please note that completion of this survey does NOT guarantee you a position. For specific details on the job duties, minimum qualifications and competency area definitions, please refer to the 3279 Recreation Leader job announcement.

The following questions will ask you to first respond to your competency preference then you will have to explain your level of experience in that area of interest.  If you have a certification for that specific activity, please indicate at the end of your response.  You may attach applicable certifications as well as your resume in a pdf format to your application.  Applicants who are certified in a particular activity but who do not possess a hard copy of the actual certification MUST submit a letter of explanation detailing the reason certification is unavailable.   



 
1.  There are four (4) competency areas and one (1) support services area in which 3279 Recreation Leaders are needed.  Please check the top three competencies that you are most interested in.  If you do not have a preference, you can skip this question.  Please refer to the announcement for examples of work in each competency area.

 
Cultural Arts consist of Visual, Performing, Digital & Professional arts including animation, ceramics, computer arts, crafts, creative writing, dance, deejaying, digital audio,  drawing, fashion, film & video, graphic design, installation art, multimedia, music, painting, photography, printmaking, radio & internet broadcasting, robotics, science & technology, sculpture, sound design, songwriting, street art, textiles, theater, woodworking & urban gardening.
 
Community Service consists of Early childhood education, After-School, Teens, Older Adults and Adaptive Recreation (People with Disabilities)  This competency is where recreation and human services intersect by providing programs and services to meet the needs of people at every stage of development. We also adapt all the Department's programs and services to include people with disabilities - most recently blind, visually impaired, deaf, hearing impaired and children with autism.
 
Leisure Services includes - Fitness: aerobics, yoga, pilates, zumba, fitness and dance; Waterfront Sports: sailing, kayaking, paddling, surfing and fishing; Outdoors: camping, back packing, eco-adventures, rock climbing, nature exploration, and geocaching; Extreme Sports: skating, BMX, mountain bikes, and ski/snow boarding; Non-traditional: Cooking, Martial Arts, RC Cars and Boats, LGBTQ programming, etc.
 
Sports & Athletics include the following activities and camps: Baseball, softball, boxing, flag football, golf, rolling soccer, soccer, futsol, tennis, track & field, volleyball, etc.
 
Support Services (Recreation Resources and Permits) serves in the following functions: Class registration (sfreconline.org), recreation and event logistic support, facility monitoring, open and close facility, issue permits, etc.

 

The next section requires you to describe in detail your experience in each competency area. Note that your description must INCLUDE HOURS in which you delivered (or professionally performed) these activities for an organization or a group.  You may INCLUDE volunteering hours in which you either assisted/led/directed or instruced that specific activity for an organization but remember to provide us details (name, description of activity and number of hours involved).   For instance, refer to the following indicators to assure your counted hours are accurate.
- Five hundred (500) hours is equivalent to approximately THREE (3) MONTHS of FULL TIME work.
- One thousand (1,000) hours is equivalent to approximately SIX (6) MONTHS of FULL TIME work.
 

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE EXPERIENCE IN THAT AREA, you can skip that section.    NOTE:  We will not consider any experience in which you performed as an athlete, a recreationalist, and a performer unless you were performing at a professional level. 

To be considered a candidate for a Recreation Leader Level III, you must provide a certification(s) during the interview stage.  If you are unable bring the actual certification(s), you must submit a letter of explanation detailing the reason why you cannot obtain a copy of your certification.
