Purpose

Under the direction of the Fire Fleet and Equipment Manager, the Fire Mechanic I services, rebuilds, repairs, overhauls, adjusts, and tests the vehicles, fire apparatus, equipment, and tools used by the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD).

Essential Functions

  • Maintains departmental vehicles, apparatus, equipment, and tools. Mounts, services, and repairs component parts of fire apparatus. Installs necessary equipment on fire apparatus for the most efficient and available use, consistent with security.
  • Recharges oxygen and compressed air cylinders (in the absence of the Compressed Air Technician), carbon dioxide, and stored pressure dry chemical portable fire extinguishers.
  • Responds to fires as ordered, and checks on the efficiency and working condition of emergency vehicles. Makes necessary adjustments on the scene of alarms to increase efficiency and avoid damage to fire apparatus.
  • Maintains required documentation and performs inventory duties.

Conditions of Employment

  • Eight-hour watch duty is occasionally required for weekdays, in addition to the normal work day, which results in working sixteen hours that day. Eight-hour watch duty may also be required on Saturdays or Sundays. When watch duty occurs, an adjustment is made in the regular weekly work schedule.
  • Must provide one’s own basic hand tools.
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work and have the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs. alone and up to 100 lbs. with assistance or by wheeled conveyance.
  • Must be physically able to drive department vehicles as well as walk, stand, and climb ladders; kneel and crouch; and make repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to withstand noise and variable environmental conditions, both indoors and out, and in all types of weather. The use of a respirator is required to reduce exposure to airborne contaminants.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Regular status as a City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position.
  2. Four years of service in a recognized automotive repair establishment as an automotive repair person or mechanic, OR completion of an auto mechanics apprenticeship.
  3. Valid State of Wisconsin driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment. Must have a good driving record.

Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in the following categories: A4, A5, A6, A7, T2, and T4. NOTE: Attaining full pay is contingent upon earning these certifications.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of the methods and tools used in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment.
  • Highly skilled in the troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of automotive equipment, including ability to maintain, test, rebuild, and repair electric motors, transformers, switchgear, and other electrical apparatus. 
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures and occupational hazards unique to repair shops; ability to perform work in a safe manner.
  • Ability to read and understand work-related documents such as manuals and procedures.
  • Knowledge of mathematics; ability to accurately calculate ratios and percentages and make measurements.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse, team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to interact with citizens in a helpful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to use City resources responsibly.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 7EN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $45,096-$48,725 annually, and the non-resident salary range is $43,990-$47,529.

Career Ladder Position:

  • Employees will advance to the next rate in the range upon certification by the Fire Chief as having attained and maintained at all times the required credentials and demonstrated job performance.
  • An employee transferred into this title will be placed in the increment that corresponds with demonstrated credentials with the approval of DER. If the employee’s prior rate is higher than the appropriate increment, the employee will retain their previous rate.
  • Promotion to Fire Mechanic II and Fire Mechanic III (Pay Range 7HN) is also possible contingent upon successful performance and attaining and maintaining the required credentials.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations and the Milwaukee Fire Department reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral exams, performance tests, or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.

NOTE: Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process who have successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary, or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
