Purpose

Assigned to the Electrical Services Unit, Transportation Operations Section, the Electrical Worker assists Municipal Services Electricians in installing, repairing and maintaining the City's electrical systems, networks, and equipment.

Essential Functions

  • Assist the Municipal Services Electricians with the installation, repair, and maintenance of the following:
    • Overhead wires, cables, transformers, traffic signal heads, lighting luminaries, copper communication cable, fiber optic cable, underground cables, transformers, conduit, manholes, vaults and associated equipment.
  • Assist the Municipal Services Electrician with the fabrication and installation of traffic signals, traffic controllers, street lighting trans closures and communication facilities.
  • Operate specialty equipment such as digger derrick (pole rig) or directional boring machine, rodding machine, and cable pullers.
  • Drive and/or operate commercial and non-commercial vehicles as needed in assigned work unit.
  • Replace lamps in street lights and traffic lights (group and individual) and perform splicing of non-electrified cables.
  • Locate City's underground electrical and water facilities.
  • Perform maintenance and regular duties in connection with the City's street lighting and traffic control systems on regularly assigned night shifts, weekend shifts, or holiday shifts.

Conditions of Employment

  • Electrical Workers must be available for emergency call-in work, as needed.  Evening, weekend, and holiday work may be assigned on a rotating schedule.
  • Ability to see colors in order to use color-coded wiring systems (cannot be color-blind).
  • Ability to work in confined underground spaces.
  • Must be able to perform physical activities in the work environment that requires agility including ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps or poles; walking and standing, crawling, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing, pushing and pulling.  
  • Must be able to work at heights in excess of 100 feet.
  • Must be able to perform heavy physical work, exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally and lifting and moving objects weighing 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions including rain, wind, excessive heat, intense cold and snow.
  • Must wear and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) standard to electrical working, including the use of common and specialized safety equipment (i.e. shoes, gloves, glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, harness, protective suits and the use of a respirator), as required.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Current status as a City of Milwaukee Employee having passed probation in a Civil Service position.
  2. Proof of successful completion (a grade of "C" or above) of one course in basic electricity from an accredited college or technical school by time of appointment.
  3. Valid driver license at time of appointment and throughout employment.
  4. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Classes A, B, and C covering general, air brakes, and combination sections within six months of appointment (contingent upon assigned work unit) and throughout employment.

Knowledges, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of material, methods, tools and proper tool use related to electrical work.  
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.      
  • Ability to perform basic mathematic calculations in order to accurately determine material quantities, measure lengths, and place equipment used in electrical installation and work activities.
  • Ability to exercise care and good judgement regarding safety at all times, abiding by safety-related policies and rules.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic prints accurately.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and interact with the public courteously.

Current Salary

The current salary range (PR 7FN) for City of Milwaukee residents is $39,138 - $48,402 annually and the non-resident salary range is $38,178 - $47,215 annually. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, written tests, interview, or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee and the Department of Public Works reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral, performance tests or personal interviews. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.

Note: Transfer/Promotional Opportunities and Promotional Examinations are not open to Milwaukee Public Schools employees or to the public. Only current City of Milwaukee employees and civilian personnel in MFD and MPD hired through a City Service Commission process who have successfully passed a probationary period for a Civil Service position will be considered. Individuals with exempt, provisional, temporary, or emergency appointments are not eligible for transfer.
