Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to enforce the International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Gas Code and city ordinance concerning plumbing and/or gas systems for new constructions, modifications or repairs. The work involves various inspections of residential and commercial sites for use of quality materials and workmanship, compliance with codes and standards, and safety precautions. The essential functions are: inspects residential and commercial underground plumbing systems, conducts rough-in inspections, inspects residential and/or commercial construction gas piping sites, inspects residential and/or commercial water heater installations, performs final inspections on residential and/or commercial sites, and performs general office functions related to the scheduling and documenting of plumbing and gas inspections. General direction is received from the Chief Plumbing Inspector.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Five years’ experience in residential and commercial plumbing and gas systems installation, maintenance and repair including one year of experience in a leadership capacity. Must be a registered journeyman Plumber and Gas Fitter with the State of Alabama at the time of appointment. 

Special Requirements

Must have or obtain a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to operate a City vehicle in the performance of plumbing and gas inspections. Must be a State Certified Master Plumber and Gas Fitter or must obtain certification within one year of employment with the City of Montgomery. Must be certified through the International Code Council for Plumbing Inspector and Fuel Gas Inspector or must obtain certification within two years of employment with the City of Montgomery.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register.  The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Inspections Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire. For this reason, applicants are urged to fill in the application form and supplemental questionnaire completely providing detailed information concerning the kinds of jobs they have held, the dates they held them, where and exactly what their duties were. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the appropriate number of eligible applicants for immediate referral, applicants will be placed in groups based on their qualifications indicated on the supplemental questionnaire and application. Applicants within each group will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order. If the number of qualified applicants is equal to or less than the appropriate number for referral, qualified candidates will be certified as equally qualified.
