Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Western Region is currently accepting applications for two (2) seasonal contractual Campground Operations/Maintenance Worker positions located at Savage River State Forest, Garrett County, Maryland. The selected candidates will be responsible for all duties associated with the Western Maryland Access and Trail Restoration Project located on the St. John's Rock/Red Dog Road. The candidates will be working on the state's first modern off-road vehicle trail which will include day use, camping and off-road vehicle riding. Job duties will include fee collection, cleaning and maintaining restrooms and campsites, documenting forest activity and general maintenance of the area. Selected candidates will be the first line of contact with State Forest visitors and campers and will need to have good communication skills, as well as knowledge of the forest rules and regulations. Good customer service skills are a key component of these positions. Weekend, holidays and evening hours are required for these positions. The candidates must be able to work independently in a remote area of Savage River State Forest. Candidates will also perform other duties as necessary to facilitate the operations of Savage River State Forest.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.  

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualifications; please include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.

ATV riding experience, First Aid Certification, CPR Certification, AED Certification, Chainsaw experience, use of a weed eater, and operation of a licensed vehicle pulling a trailer, in addition to any other training deemed necessary for these positions.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
