Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Fisheries & Boating Services is currently accepting applications for a seasonal contractual Grounds Supervisor in Oxford, Maryland. The selected candidate will be responsible for grounds maintenance on an 11 acre laboratory facility. Duties include maintenance of grounds, snow removal, special projects and other maintenance related tasks. Candidate will be responsible for maintaining all tools and equipment, determining cost of material and length of time to complete projects, maintaining records, assigning work schedules and performing necessary tasks to include mowing, weeding, mulching, painting, dock and pond maintenance and other related duties. Responsible for supervision and training of other workers as appropriate and ensure compliance of work and safety standards.

Please note, this position might require some weekend work and/or variable hours. We seek candidates in good physical condition as work is occasionally strenuous.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of eighth grade.  

Experience: Three years experience in truck or flower gardening, in the care and maintenance of grounds and lawns, landscaping, horticultural or nursery work.  

Note: Additional experience as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to 2 years of the required education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
