LOCATION OF POSITION

Potomac-Garrett State Forest, Oakland, Maryland (Garrett County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Forest Service/Western Region is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Potomac-Garrett State Forest in Oakland, Maryland (Garrett County). You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.

#1 MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT (1 vacancy) ($13.68 / hour)
Contract Period: March 7, 2018 - December 25, 2018; 40 hours/week

The Maintenance Assistant position serves as crew chief and will lead lower level maintenance workers in maintenance of the State Forest. This position is responsible for the maintenance of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment. The work entails independently performing moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, including heavy equipment operations for road and trail maintenance, routine construction work, campsite maintenance, rendering routine preventative maintenance, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures, mechanical equipment, grounds and roadways. Other duties may include but are not limited to: operating both small and heavy equipment, planting trees, operating chainsaws, habitat improvement projects, wildland fire suppression and boundary line maintenance. Selected candidate may be required to work some weekends and/or holidays. Applicants must be able to lift 70 lbs and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain.

#2 MAINTENANCE WORKER WITH CAMPGROUND OPERATIONS (1 vacancy) ($11.53 / hour)
Contract Period: March 7, 2018 - December 25, 2018; 40 hours/week (Wednesday – Saturday)

This position is responsible for all duties associated with campground operations including fee collection in four remote primitive camping areas; cleaning and maintaining restrooms and campsites; documenting forest activities; and general maintenance of State Forest facilities. As first line of contact with State Forest visitors and campers, this position requires good communication skills and is expected to convey knowledge of forest rules and regulations, forest attractions and recreational opportunities including information about the surrounding areas of tourism and attractions. Weekend work required for operational duties, with weekday duties being more general maintenance and labor. Applicants must be able to lift 70 lbs and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain.

#3 MAINTENANCE WORKER (1 vacancy) ($10.89 / hour)
Contract Period: March 7, 2018 - December 25, 2018; 40 hours/week

The Maintenance Worker position is responsible for the general maintenance of buildings, grounds, facilities and equipment of the State Forest. #4 CAMPGROUND OPERATIONS (1 vacancy / part-time only) ($10.89 / hour)
Contract Period: May 16, 2018 - September 4, 2018; 16 hours/week (Fridays & Saturdays)

The Campground Operations position is responsible for all duties associated with campground operations including fee collection in four remote primitive camping areas; cleaning and maintaining restrooms and campsites; documenting forest activities; and general maintenance of State Forest facilities. As first line of contact with campers and all forest visitors, this position requires adequate knowledge of forest rules and regulations, forest attractions and recreational opportunities and information regarding the surrounding areas. Working weekends and holidays will be required. Applicants must be able to lift 70 lbs and work in inclement weather and rugged terrain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT POSITION #1 ONLY

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualification(s).

1. Experience operating small equipment such as skid steer, mowers (equivalent to JD X300 or 720), chainsaws.

2. Experience operating heavy equipment such as front-end loader (equivalent to JD 54J), dozer (equivalent to JD 450H), tractor (equivalent to NH TSD100), and radial arm brush hog (17' reach).

3. Completed S-022, S-130, S-190 Wildfire Training Courses (and willing to take S-212 Wild land Fire Chainsaw Training).

4. Experience applying pesticides and completion of "Pesticide Users Safety Training" or equivalent. 

5. Possession of Class A or B Commercial Driver's License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION FOR MAINTENANCE WORKER POSITION #3 ONLY

Possession of Class A or B Commercial Driver's License.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland. Driving record may be required prior to hire.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
