The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a diverse, bilingual community who in partnership with families, provides an equitable and exemplary education in a nurturing, engaging, and challenging environment to ensure our students achieve personal excellence and become lifelong learners.  As such, we are looking for dedicated individuals who can join us in the education of the children at MSD.

Main Purpose of Job

The main function of the employment specialist is to transport, train, and monitor students in a variety of community work settings and to provide support to those students for employment preparation and job readiness.

POSITION DUTIES

Assist the Project-Coordinator in establishing employment opportunities for students.  Oversee the safety of students, helping students develop an up to date resume, discussing and selecting proper clothing for job interviews and work, arranging transportation, and assisting students in writing thank you letters after each interview.  The Employment Specialist must also provide support to the student and employer and/or job supervisor in each placement.  This includes: employee training and retraining of job skills, quality assurance, adhering to the work schedule, negotiating lunch and break times, developing natural supports for the student employee, coworkers, and family members, and providing follow up services to support the student employee in a successful placement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education or a related field as well as experience in working with the Deaf and Hard of hearing students.

Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and written English required. Knowledge of Deaf community required.

A valid Maryland driver’s license and excellent driving record are required.

Employment Specialist must be able to work independently with limited supervision and demonstrate experience in positive, pro-active behavior management techniques and marketing/public relations skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
