Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

To provide leadership and supervision to supervisors, student life staff, and students in Residence Hall Program and After School Program.  Monitor and evaluate the residential program for deaf and hard of hearing students.  Oversee the daily activities, assign staff, assess their work, and assist them in the use of behavior modification, crisis intervention, and general counseling of students.  After 3:00 p.m., the Director of Student Life functions as the campus supervisor for student programming and facility use.

POSITION DUTIES

Oversee the Student Life Programs.

Maintain Department of Human Resources (DHR) residential program licensing.

Inform and train counselors in staffing procedures and required DHR training.

Develop, explain, and interpret to staff the objectives and philosophies of the residential programs.

Develop and modify programs as required with assistance from the Dean of Student Affairs.

Screen applicants, interview, and otherwise assist in the hiring of residential hall staff.

Provide daily supervision of staff and students, assign staff, and approve overtime.

Meet with the residential hall staff weekly to review the Student Life program effectiveness and students’ progress.

Observe and communicate with overnight counselors and oversee the morning program when necessary.

Maintain and file records on students and staff and maintain contacts with parents.

Check the dormitory building and grounds on a regular basis to assure safety and comfort.

Review all overnight logs, incident reports, and field trip requests.

Oversee, review, and implement (in conjunction with the behavior specialist) behavior modification programs.

Develop staff schedules and relocate staff in direct supervision of students when possible due to staff absence.

Assist in first aid care.

Manage student behavior and counsel students when appropriate.

Recommend progressive disciplinary action when necessary.

Attend the school management team meetings.

Oversee and develop student development activities and programs.

Oversee and develop activities associated with after school and recreational programs for Elementary, Middle School, and High School.

Provide year-end staffing reports on all students in the department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must hold a Master’s degree, have two years of Human Service experience, and one year of supervisory experience or

Hold a Bachelor’s degree, have four years of Human Service Experience, and three years of supervisory experience.

 

Must be proficient in American Sign Language and in written English. 

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Employees in this classification will be required to obtain and maintain Residential Child and Youth Care Administrator certification.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

3. Employees in this classification will be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid training leading to certification.  These certifications must be kept current as a requirement of residential child care licensure by the Maryland Department of Human Resources.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are required to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing students, staff, and parents, therefore they must be proficient in American Sign Language and in written English.

2. Employees in this classification will be required to pass a medical examination and annual screening for tuberculosis as a requirement of residential child care licensure by the Maryland State Department of Human Resources.

3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

4. Employees in this classification will be required to apply for a criminal background check as a requirement of the Annotated Code of Maryland, Family Law, Section 5-561.
