Introduction

Main Purpose of Job

The School Counselor (Frederick Campus only) duties of this position includes providing school-based mental health counseling services to deaf and hard of hearing students and their families enrolled at MSD, including those students who have been identified as having multiple disabilities.  School counseling services help enhance student success at MSD by supporting the development of MSD students' social/emotional skills, behavior, and well-being through the use of evidence-based counseling interventions and strategies.

The Diversity and Inclusion Specialist (Frederick and Columbia Campus) will work collaboratively with MSD’s Diversity & Inclusion teams to assess MSD’s learning and working environment and provide advice, guidance, and support to leadership and train employees and students on equality and diversity issues.  This may include, but is not limited to, equality in the areas of age, disability, gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation.  The Diversity and Inclusion Specialist will promote the equity of students and staff in all aspects of the school and work to identify and resolve conflict and promote community cohesion.

An expectation of both the School Counselor and the Diversity and Inclusion Specialist roles is to work collaboratively with staff and parents in enhancing the overall social and emotional environment for students in the school, residence halls, and home.  The incumbent must be willing to travel to both campuses, as required.

POSITION DUTIES

MSD School Counselor:

Provides evidence-based school mental health counseling to MSD students, both individually and in groups.

Provides counseling and support during “crisis” situations.

Works collaboratively with staff to improve the social and emotional development of students in the classroom; and assists staff in establishing a learning environment that provides students with an opportunity to grow socially and emotionally.

Prepares and maintains necessary records and reports on student counseling services and treatment progress.

Provides school wide instructional and preventive workshops for students and in-service training to MSD staff.

Becomes proficient in Professional Crisis Management.

MSD Diversity and Inclusion Specialist:

Researches and shares best practices regarding diversity and equity.

Creates and promotes diversity-oriented events, minority and protected class inclusion programs, and cross-cultural workshops.

Networks to bring to MSD a wide variety of perspectives, speakers and trainers.

Ensures continued compliance with government regulations and institutional policy.

Works with members of MSD’s minority population, addressing their concerns and meeting their specific needs.

Works with small groups of students with diversity issues.

Liaises with community groups and relevant organizations.

Provides information and options in responding to complaints and identified concerns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Master’s Degree in Counseling

Possession of, or eligibility for certification as a School Counselor through the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE)

Experience:

Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English

Experience working with Deaf and hard of hearing students

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience working with Deaf and hard of hearing students with multiple disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability.

Experience using/developing social stories.

Experience in areas of multi-cultural and social justice education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Must possess or be eligible for certification as a School Counselor by the Maryland State Department of Education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense. (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Applicants must have:

Knowledge of theory, principles, ethics, and evidence-based practice of school counseling.

Ability to perform school-based mental-health counseling with Deaf and hard of hearing students in grades Pre-K-12.

Ability to recognize changes in students social and emotional functioning and revise their counseling program as indicated.

Experience in engagement with issues impacting diverse populations.

Ability to prepare and deliver reports and summaries.

Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
