Introduction

Maryland Public Television is a leader in the production of broadcast programming for public television. MPT's local/regional television credits include public affairs, original performance, entertainment and documentary programs for the citizens of Maryland. Beyond broadcast, MPT creates instructional videos, develops training and builds Internet sites that serve tens of thousands of students, teachers and child-care providers annually. MPT outreach activities, especially relating to arts, culture and history, take place in all areas of the state to further fulfill MPT's mission to engage, enlighten and entertain.

This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

LOCATION OF POSITION

This position will be located in Owings Mills with the possibility of being transferred to Hagerstown.

Main Purpose of Job

To perform the necessary repairs and adjustments of the electronic and mechanical equipment located at the WMPB, WMPT, WCPB AND WFPT transmitter sites to ensure the highest quality transmitted signals in accordance with FCC and MPT standards. To support the Assistant Chief Engineer in maintaining the operations of all transmitter sites during normal business hours and by sharing on-call responsibilities during nights, holidays and weekends.

Note: This position may require a flexible work schedule including nights, weekends and holidays as well as working outside in unfavorable weather conditions.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on the transmitters and associated electronic, electrical and mechanical equipment: primarily at the WMPB, WMPT, WCPB AND WFPT sites. 
  • Maintain the technical standards of the transmitted signals as specified by the FCC and MPT by determining whether the equipment is operating within manufacturers and/or FCC specifications.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs of all equipment used in the transmission of MPT's signal.
  • Use various testing devices to repair and restore equipment to factory specifications and certify this by entry into maintenance log.
  • Operate and maintain transmitter remote control system, transmitter control terminal, and all associated audio and video monitoring equipment.
  • Remove obsolete equipment, install new equipment, and/or make necessary modifications to existing equipment to facilitate the new installation. 
  • Assist in janitorial and grounds keeping duties when needed.
  • Communicate with contractors, vendors, equipment manufacturers, state agency employees and MPT employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Associates degree in electronics or electrical engineering or an equivalent combination of related course work and experience.

Experience: Two years experience in broadcast environment performing maintenance, repair and installation of transmitting and receiving equipment and systems.  Experience must include preventative maintenance procedures.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must accompany the application.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) General Radiotelephone License Required

Note: If you do not possess an FCC license, you must obtain your license within the first 12 months of employment.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbent will be required to perform the following: lift equipment in excess of 50 pounds and install in seven (7) foot tall racks; lift, install and remove water pumps in excess of 100 pounds; climb ladders 10-15 feet in height to work on transmission line, lighting, and building rooftop equipment.
