The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the Director of Business Retention, Expansion & Strategic Rural Development position within the Office of Business Development.

The World Trade Center - 401 East Pratt Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202

Main Purpose of Job

This is a leadership position focused on the overall performance and engagement of the Office's twelve (12) regional business development representatives, each representing different regions of the State. The primary focus of this position and staff is to enhance the economic vitality of the State through retention and expansion of businesses and industry across Maryland.

POSITION DUTIES

The Director links Maryland companies to partners and services which support business growth, retention, and expansion focused on jobs and access to talent.  These linkages include collaboration with federal, state, local public and private resources to address all factors that enable a business to thrive and grow in Maryland.  The Director will work closely with local economic development officials, company executives and senior leadership to facilitate the creation and retention of jobs and increase capital investment across the state.

The selected employee will have demonstrated experience in leading goal focused regional teams and a track record of achievement.  Managing and setting performance targets coupled with a solid working knowledge of multiple business sectors are key attributes. Knowledge and skills in business management, proposal development, project management, business needs assessment, strategic business planning, and real estate ventures; possess strong office management, written, oral and interpersonal communications skills and ability to work with high-level public and private sector officials.

Candidate should be proficient the Microsoft Office Suite for Windows including Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, Google Mail and/or other relevant software. 

Travel throughout the State and some evening meetings are required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from a four year college or university in business management, economics, or a related field and at least eight years of recent professional experience in industrial, business, or economic development, planning, marketing, commercial real estate or related field. 

Equivalent combination of education and experience will be accepted. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of the required experience to include direct supervision of other performance based employees.

Familiarity with business and economic development in Maryland.
