This is a full-time contractual position with the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), the State’s historic preservation office, located within the Maryland Department of Planning (MDP).  The position is located at MHT’s offices at 100 Community Place, Crownsville, Maryland 21032.

Main Purpose of Job

The purpose of the position is to undertake an evaluation of locally-designated historic districts for National Register eligibility in accordance with the requirements of the Maryland Heritage Structure Tax Credit Program.

POSITION DUTIES

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), the State’s historic preservation office, located within the Maryland Department of Planning (MDP), is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic Architectural Historian to fill the position of Architectural Historian / Historic District Surveyor.  

Duties of the position will include the review of existing local historic district designation information to determine whether it is adequate to support decisions regarding Tax Credit eligibility and augment or supplement that information as needed.  

This position will carry out fieldwork, to verify or update documentation by visiting locally designated historic districts, recording (by written description and photography) their constituent properties, determining current condition and integrity, and mapping boundaries. Conduct documentary research to develop historical context and to determine and justify Periods of Significance. Prepare revised or new Determination of Eligibility (DOE) forms for each local historic district. These duties will be carried out in coordination with local government agencies responsible for the administration of designated historic districts.  

The successful applicant for this job will have experience in architectural field recording and preparation for National Register nominations and related documentation, excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Proficiency with computers and digital photography and demonstrated writing skills are essential.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Art History, History, Historic Architecture, Folklore, American Studies or other closely related field.  

Experience: Two years of professional experience and/or preservation internships in one of the above fields.  

Notes: 1. Additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year to year basis for the required professional experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of historic architecture, building analysis, and investigation/documentation methods and a demonstrated ability to conduct architectural field surveys and historical research.  

Knowledge of the criteria, documentation standards, and operations of the National Register of Historic Places, and demonstrated successful completion of National Register nomination(s).

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.  As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
